GEM: 2
JUNK: 2
That is the question. This Italian leather sectional sofa from the glorious 80's apparently cost $20,000 20 years ago. Now it is for sale on the Upper West Side for $750. The seller says,
It seats a lot of people and is would be very cool for a loft or large apartment.
Our question is, considering the moving cost and the dated style, is this a gem? Or is this junk? MGR

Has to be a gem to someone who may love stuff from the 80's. But for me its way to worn in and frumpy looking- its junk.
This is a GREAT groovy vintage piece that I'd love in my living room -- if my living room were the size of an Olympic swimming pool. It looks like it belongs in a lounge at Studio 54...or in Liza's living room.
In the right 70's-era apartment (like the Galleria on 57th off Lex), with LOTS of chrome (Pink shag rug MUST go!), it would be fabulous. I say, GEM!
If you are handy or know someone who re upoholsters furniture That could be one hell of a gem piece. I hated 80's furniture but its the shiny leather that dates it so much. The style is a classic simple style and if reupholstered with a nice smooth solid soft material and if the somewhat slumped bolsters had a little padding added to it to plump them up I bet it would be a great sofa for a big loft and great for entertaining. You might dump another $700-$1000 into it maybe more or less depending on your fabric choices and who does the work but really it could be well worth it.
(cue cheesy saxaphone music... bow chicky bow wow)
Oh my heck! As of this moment I am a vegan! Whoever did that to those poor innocent cows? They could have been coats, or shoes for a small village, or even Eric Estrada's back seat; but that couch? YIKES!
The ad should read: Italian Leather sofa, good for therapy sessions -if you're the patient. Seek therapy. Seek a hit man. Seek a fork lift and a dumpster.
The best thing to do here is cut your loses and recite as your new montra: "No more trends, no more trends, no more trends...".
gross. but then i dislike most leather furniture.
