Gem or Junk? 1960's Stereo Sideboard

2004_8_17_gemorjunk.jpgWorth its weight in mold? Admiral Solid State 60 AM/FM stereo with turntable that plays at 78rpm, 45rpm, & 33rpm. It looks so nice, but it is full of old electronics. It plays three kinds of records, but who has records? It's priced at an interesting $89. Would you buy it and rip out the metal or is it worth much more as is? Is this a gem or is it _____? I'm buying a console radio from the 1930's so that i can rip out all the old crap and put in a pvr, you could probably do something similar with this old thing, but I would save the stuff you rip out and see if it has any market value on the antique radio collector's circuit.

How's the cabinetry?

If it's nice solidly made wood, no crappy particle board with veneer, you have much nicer base to work from if you want to rip out old electronics junk and do somethign useful with it.

Veneer furniture looks great, but can't be repaired worth a damn once it acquires a couple of dings and bumps and gouges

I ripped the electronics out of a nice RCA cabinet and put in my own stereo. The cabinet was real wood and in very good shape -- but I only paid $15 for it. The electronics were shot, but that didn't matter, since I pulled it out.

For $89 this piece would have to be in very good shape and/or made from real wood to make it worth the effort, I think.

If it's real wood then it's totally worth it. Especially with the rising cost of both wood and furniture that our parents probably threw out of the basement when we were 7. If it were in LA and I came across it I'd buy it. (t'were it real wood o'course)

I bought a similiar unit for $10. It is actually the biggest attention getter at my house when people visit. The electronics (vaccuum tubes) work and sound super. Mine still has the original brochure which state it has 200 watts of power. The needles are only $5 at radio shack. The AM and FM tuner picks up stations nothing else will.

FYI, I have this exact model, in perfect working order. It could use some refinishing because the cat uses it as a step up to the window sill, and his rear claws scratch it up a bit. Its also a little crackly (when you turn the volume "loudness" nob), but I think it just needs some cleaning on the inside.

I personally wouldn't gut it if the thing still works. It may not be worth a lot now (I honestly have no idea), but it will probably not go down in value.
