apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Hot or Not?

Wet dreams. In keeping with AT's aspirational nature, we received this submission for the Most Beautiful Bedroom Contest. Needless to say, this is not our dear reader's bedrooom but "the bedroom of [his] dreams."

Decorating tips: Keep it simple/organized, put up soothing paintings/decorations and always avoid bright colors.

Statement: This is the most beautiful bedroom ever. A soothing cocoon, an oasis where I retire every day from that hell called life.

Poor guy. But now it is time for the peanut gallery to weigh in. (Thanks, C!) MGR

I'd switch up the blinds with sheer curtains and remove any mirrors.

You know, I just hate the tyranny of the all-white crowd. For some people, white is very soothing, others see it as very cold. No one's right or wrong so this "no bright colors" thing is not advice I personally would accept.

Uh... speaking of spam prevention... my comment seems to feature a link to my e-mail. Could you please remove it. I don't want spam.

I like the giant mirrors and overall it's a beautiful room- but realistically, I could never survive in a completely white room because 1. I like some color, and 2. it's just a little too blinding for my liking. With a grey-haired cat and dust...what a chore it would be to keep up! Although, I do like the panel?/light? above the bed. Nice feature.

I dislike all the mirrors in the bedrooms we've seen.

apropos the Chinese year of the rooster, aren't mirrors in bedrooms bad feng shui? (I think ceiling fans are too but no one is going to part me from my casablanca fan.)

I've only ever seen one white bedroom I REALLY liked..and it was an apartment in Hong Kong. It's in a book I have, but the name eludes me right now.... Anyway, they tied all the white together without making it "cold" and despite the small space, brilliantly was able to "seperate" it into different livable areas AND conceal all the owner's belongings within it to keep the minimalist/soothing (and it was extremely soothing) appearance. I loved it.

Depends on where the mirror is in relation to your waking position. You should not be able to see it, head on, upon waking. Screws with your chi.

Good Lord... How to respond to a wish as opposed to an actual entry...

Is this a cK wet dream or what? The mirrors reflecting against one another is most definitely bad juju... the Escher effect from looking down the endless series of reflections would make me feel... agoraphobic, anxiety-ridden, nauseous, and ugh... don't even want to contemplate.

I dunno... stark white... is this the trendy hospital offering?

Can you say "ice cube"?

Still waiting for a modern, relaxed, cozy, and sexy bedroom... I know it's out there.

I'd have to shave my 3 black cats.

My favorite white bedroom is in the movie "Someone To Watch Over Me". Mimi Roger's character has a beautiful bedroom in her UES penthouse. (Coincidentally my late Uncle Jimmy plays her neighbor who gets bumped off).

That place seems like it'd have one hell of an echo with all those hard edges and sharp corners. Also-- at TV at the foot of the bed? Ouch.

Red and white is bad luck in the UK. "Blood and bandages."

Yikes, I know all you Type A city types are up before dawn, but eventually you'll have to get up after the sun...and you'll need serious sunglasses in that room to avoid retinal overload.

argh! an 80's nightmare! cool white with pink and red accents?!??! and yeah, what's up with all the hard edges and architectural mirrors? i love all white - i really do - but there's a right way and a WRONG way to do it! *shiver*

posted by seema on 2005-02-10 15:03:13

Are those vertical blinds? Not sexy, very 1980's office park, don't include these if your dream is realized.

posted by patrick on 2005-02-10 15:04:55

Don't like the vertical blinds, too many mirrors and hard edges either but as a mother of two with no room to really call my own this looks like a fantasy hotel room for a week alone. I love the TV where it is and the all-white decors demands someone else is available at whatever expense to keep it all spotless. Book me in.

Isn't this from the set of "2001" after Dave has been sucked into the black thing? If I had a cool spacesuit to go with it, maybe...

I know this is a tough crowd but Geezz. But this is only an inspiration, the only all white room I found.

There are a few elements I'd like to emulate like nice smooth white wall - white floor - sleek appearance - the cozy couch.

Some elements will definetly have to go blinds, mirrors, sharp edges & corners.

And to avoid the hospital/igloo effect I would add some items to personalize and warm it up paintings, pictures, books, curtains .

Again a bedroom must suit the owner. I have no pet and am quite clean. I can pull it off and will enjoy it.

I sent this to AT as a joke never thinking it would be posted. Thanks AT and thanks for the comments.

I've seen that apartment in Hong Kong in Dwell, Wallpaper and others (it's the one one room one with everything hidden down each side of the place, right? If so, I dug it too).

posted by Evan Rose on 2005-02-10 19:18:24

I thought it was a bathroom.

Like many of the AT readers who've seen it, this room leaves me cold. There's just not enough "there" there... The only thing interesting in the top picture is the sunlight. This apartment feels prefab, rather than comfortable. I'd be afraid to touch anything because I'd leave fingerprints. Even if you're going for minimalism, there should still be something of you in the room, otherwise you should just give up and live in a hotel already.

I hate to admit it, but I do have a TV at the base of my bed. I live in a studio and everything's only a few steps apart.

posted by mary on 2005-02-10 22:07:33

Evan Rose- yes that's the Hong Kong apartment! All the owners stuff was hidden in the walls and the entire place looked so soft and comfortable. The entertainment center was awesome too.

Evan-Rose, Miya,
Where can I get pics of this Hong Kong appartment?

posted by Charles on 2005-02-10 23:39:43

Charles- Like evan-rose said, it was in an issue of Wallpaper and Dwell...but I also have it in a book. If you have trouble finding it (or just want it quickly), I'll be glad to scan and email them to you (and finally find out the name of the book when I pull it off the shelf).

the more i look at other bedrooms posted on this site, the more i like this one. it is a little too white, but compared to the others, it seems to have more of an appeal to me. may be its becuase i am craving checking into a high end hotel---which this room reminds me of.

for a white-on-white bedroom that is ACTUALLY nice, check out benjamin noriega-ortiz's website- www.bnodesign.com. click on "residential" and then look at the "designer's house." now THAT'S white-on-white done well.

It looks like Freakin' February in North Dakota!

Seema--
Good call. Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz is one designer who uses white as a COLOR, instead of the mere absence of it. But he also gets the most mileage out of the white with his judicious use of pops of color. But yes, he is a true talent. I also like how he mixes store-bought with custom, antiques with modern pieces.

I'd be wearing sunglasses even in my sleep. Couldn't take this.

Will say that I _love_ to watch TV in bed and would want a huge plasma number hanging on the wall facing my bed. Just hide the cords--those really stress me out.

I am so glad to see someone else who loves the all white idea. It's not practical or warm in community spaces but I find the lack of stimulation perfect for the bedroom. Also, I don't get a lot of sunlight in my bedroom so there's no fear of going blind.
Think of it as a blank palatte...you can add and subtract at whim!
I am designing my all-white bedroom as we speak.
In order to warm it up and aviod getting bored I am apply 70's mood color therapy and projection art. I saw a pic of a Paris hotel with all white rooms and lighting that changed from pink to yellow to blue or green at the touch of a switch. Colorful accents get a new vibrant look with the change too. I saw an article a few months back in New York Magazine that talked about using tinted lightbulbs to banish the winter blues and this solidified the idea for me.
Anyone interested in discussing how-to's of projection art? Did you know you can project your small TV onto the (white) wall and get a big screen experience without eating up precious space and adding an ugly monster TV to ruin your design?

Anyway....thanks for the added inspiration.

I dont like TVs in the bedroom, maybe if its inconspicuous, but not when it's there in your face all the time...
