Following last week's Brigid Berlin post, we were excited to see New York Social Diary feature Brigid's apartment over the weekend.
As idiosyncratic as her art and life, Brigid's apartment is surprisingly, well... girlish. Her obsessive collections, particularly her fondness for pugs, are piled on top of each other, run along the back of the sofa, the walls, all available surfaces; her taste in pattern moves from classic cabbage rose prints to leopard spots to hellish red bouquets of what appear to be chili peppers and hibiscus flowers...

I liked the bedroom, but I found the rest to be overwhelming.

Too much

I liked some of it, hated some of it. I really wasn't sure which way to go until I saw the dog pillows on the back of the sofa.

Since she likes it, I love it.

I only like the first picture with the red wallpaper, the rest is just too busy and kitschy - in a bad way.
view jjanul's profile
Although I think there are waaay too many pug pillows lined up on the back of the sofa -
- and the frilly curtains and the room with the daybed are a bit "too precious" for my personal tastes, overall this is a delightful apartment.

Really, one can't say "good" or "bad" about this, I don't think: it's a direct outcropping of her personality.

Love. Cozy, warm and happy.

leopard print carpet? really? :(

pattern and clutter overload!!!!

Nope, not for me, too much.
Just imagine dusting, and having to pass the vacuum cleaner in this...

This is like posting a "Is this steak hot or not?" on a vegan site.
This isn't the audience for this kind of interior, so no surprise the feedback so far.
For the record, I don't mind this style of interior at all. Very Upper East side/Diana Vreeland meets Mario Buatta.
And this dame (and/or her designer) could teach us all a thing or two about mixing patterns. The net effect here is FAR from chaotic. We'd all be the wiser if we studied why the effect isn't in these pics, even if your personal style runs a lot cleaner. There are still lessons and inspiration here...

I kinda love it! I have to find out where they got all of the pug pillows...love!
view hanako66's profile
Oh, this would drive me stark raving insane, but I didn't vote either way, because it obviously makes her happy, and that's what matters.

I love the red entrance with the wallpaper. Although it is not my style, and could not live in such a space, I like the force of its owner's personality and respect its sense of style.
view mschatelaine's profile
This is just about the most disturbing apartment I have even seen.

I agree with Patrick (the other one). This might not be your taste, but this is how to do this look right.

She's completely crazy and that apartment makes me claustrophobic... but she'll aways have a place in my heart. Brigid... in all of her fat, wild, absurd glory inspired me as a teenager. I realized you didn't have to be some pretty, perfect model to be cutting edge. (of course, being rich probably helped, but whatev). Cool interview.

"...this is how to do this look right."
Really? This looks to me like a meticulous and subversive parody of hyper-frilly 'luxurious' traditional design -- the chamber of hell reserved for Mario Buatta and the Duchess of Windsor. I'm inclined to believe that it must be deliberate, but I'm not sure whether I find it clever or sad that the artist lives inside her satire.

It looks like my grandma puked all over the place in there.

I don't care what the others say; I really like this.
It looks as if it would feel like the inside of a genie's bottle.
An Upper East Side genie, that is.

When I read the interview and saw the photo of Brigid, it all made sense. Would I want to live there? I'd rather stick pins in my eyes. But, for her it works.
Her apartment is full of the things she loves, her memories, her life...and that's so much better than some of the sterile "modern" homes I've seen that show no personality at all.

With the exception of the lined-up pug brigade, there seems to be nothing especially satiric about this at all. It is (like it or not) and established genre of decorating.
view patrick (the other one)'s profile
patrick(the other one), is correct. this isn't the "you can have this look for less" kind of place or style of decorating.
this very personal style transends judgements such as "hot or not".
I'm sure Brigid is roaring with laughter at the thought!

@patrick(the other one)
What is the audience for "this kind of interior"?
view KEEHNAN's profile
I love it. Most of the stuff on here is stark & modern, which I hate. This is cozy, warm and insane. My kind of style. It's her personality - and it's the most fantastic apartment I've seen.
And, as far as the dust goes, I'm pretty sure she has a full time cleaning woman, she can afford it.

Isn't the audience for this kind of interior somebody with money?
I'm too manly for this type of an interior but I do kind of like the 3rd photo with the leopard print foot stool.

I love it. She's a genius. You guys saw the tabloid newspaper pages done in needlepoint, right?

The bedroom was lovely, the rest of it gave me a headache.
view suzy8track's profile
The audience is probably not one reading a blog, let's start there.

whoa. sensory overload. pull back! pull back!

I agree that the room with the daybed is a little too... "grandma's special doll room, no grandkids allowed" for my tastes, but everything else is awesome. I love over-the-top goodness!

fantastic eye for mixing color and patterns. i love that. i can borrow some of the mood, for sure. there's something VERY cozy about that green sofa and rug and pillows. she nailed it. my favorite room is the first one but i do love much of the rest. i've been to berlin. this is atypical, i think of homes there. which makes this even more great.

It reminds me of my great grandmother's house, except hers was filled with deer and horses rather than pugs.
This space makes me feel all cosy and happy. It stirs up so many good memories.

This sort of layering is very hard to do.
I bet the photos don't do it justice.

Do you guys not get that her interiors are ironic takes on designer icons? There's the Diana Vreeland "garden in hell" red room, the Mario Buatta pug-dog living room, the Sister Parish spoof with the needlepoint rug, etc. She obviously knows a ton about design history and is having a bit of fun with it.
view Lisa (Montreal)'s profile
It's chaotic and eclectic and put together so well! Its inspiring and ingenious and unique.
Patrick is right, the pattern mixing is so effective for something so busy.
Most people (myself included) don't have personalities that big nor the drapes to match it! but I am in awe of her because she does and she does it so well.

Beautifully done, not original at all, I love to look at it, but wouldn't want to dust and keep it clean. This look requires a maid!
view beyd's profile
Could we be careful with the comments, folks? Even if it's not your style, please remember that this is someone's home, not a photo shoot in a design magazine. Surely there are ways to express what we dislike about a space without comparing it to bodily functions like "puke."
view mfarling's profile
I actually really liked it. The only thing I disliked was the animal print ottoman in the living room. It just seemed out of place.
