Might the axe be the new antlers? These axes are hand forged and tempered in Maine, then the handles are hand painted and polished in New Jersey. Best Made Company explains their axe obsession: An axe is indispensable and sublime, the epitome of self-reliance and independence, a perfect design object, a timeless instrument.

Dude, it's an axe. You use it to cut stuff, trees preferably.
If someone is willing to pay that much, then they should just give me the $250 and I'll kick them in the nuts.

makes a great gift for the design-savvy axe murderer

I like the idea and would probably hang one in my house.
Although, that price tag is ridiculous. It would be much more fun to buy an axe at the hardware store and paint your own.

$250 for an axe with a painted handle? What?

My husband is an arborist and he teased me when he walked into the office and saw me reading this post. Apparently they aren't cool enough for someone who uses axes on a regular basis.

This will round out my collection perfectly. Want to come down to my basement to see it?

This is beyond lame. Painted fake antlers made more sense. Sorta.

This post made me think twice about axes...they are quite attractive, streamlined tools...but I'd rather buy just a well made one from a hardware store, or an antique, than one of these fancy ones...they kind of vaguely remind me of those cheesy pink handled tool sets you can buy for "the ladies." :P

Which one is the Lizzy Borden Designer Edition Axe?
view bepsf's profile
New wooden handled axe at Harbor Freight: $16
3 cans spray paint at Lowes: $9
some leftover frog tape: free
Selling a $250 designer axe to a bunch of jerks?
$225 profit... I mean, PRICELESS.
And thank you bepsf... i think i will now make a lizzy model for above my daughter's crib.

From the website: "Put it in your cubicle"
Dear god, I hope I never encounter anyone with an axe in their cubicle.

The first axe is $350...sheesh! Vaguely reminiscent of Donald Lipski's early art...I like that these originate in Maine but doubt many of the crusty authentic Mainers I know would go for the polka dots!LoL

Buy the axe and I will paint something ten times better for $10.

Ha ha ha Lizzy Borden Axe... funny bepsf.
This rates up there with the hand painted Toilet Plungers.
Though a plunger is a bit less dangerous...eeks.

I think they're cute, but I'd never waste my money on one when a $5 can of Krylon would do the trick.

I actually painted once my hammer in funky colors... I was 14. geez, I could have sell it, begin a "designer" line and be rich by now!

I can't even begin to fathom why anyone would want to decorate with an axe and I even grew up in a rural area.

I can see the tool being worth $250 depending on the quality of the hand forging. But then hanging it on the wall would be decreasing the value, at least to me.
It makes me a little sad to see (potentially) artisan made tools of a higher quality be reduced to wall decor.
On the other hand, the finest axe I can think of is not as expensive as one of these:

Sounds like a pretentious oxymoron. Designer Axe?
For the design savvy lumberjack, the nice, quiet, axe murder down the block - the must have tool for the season. I can see them drooling over one now.
Free advise don't trust anyone who buys one.

"Might the axe be the new antlers?"
YES!!
They're both supremely tacky, useless, and I would cringe to have either in my home.

I bought the Firth of Forth.
It's beautiful, and I plan to use it! Which is what the founders would like people to do with these axes, although they're not against people using them as decoration.
Granted these axes are not for everyone, but please don't bash when you don't know anything about the company.
This hot or not page doesn't do the the founders justice.
