Hot or Not? Just One Print

10-6-08text1.jpg

A classic decorator's trick is to cover the key pieces in a room using only one pattern. These photos from Desire To Inspire caught our eye this morning, with their exclusive use of just one bold print. Often times, this fabric is carried over to the curtains, and sometimes even to the walls themselves...

With the trend in recent years towards a more eclectic, mix-and-match style of decorating, this uniform aesthetic has fallen somewhat out of vogue. It doesn't allow really allow for a room to grow over time in the same fashion, and often requires a substantial initial investment.

What do you think? Is this one for the history books, or just waiting for a proper revival? Would you do this in your own home?

I'm not so keen on the second photo specifically...
...and I think the first room would be better if it had draperies in that beautiful Blue and White fabric -
- but I've always loved the effect created by using the same fabric on multiple elements in a room.

I like it but I could never do it. I like too much random stuff.

It depends in a big way on the patterns, too. I'm not wild about the second photo either.

It's one of those techniques whose results are either gorgeous (top photo) or hideous (second photo). There's no in between.

Interior detonation. Maybe if it were in smaller doses, like on throw pillows, instead of entire couches. I think that look has been out of style for awhile, I hope it's not "in" again.

Too matchy matchy! This would drive me crazy! I prefer to mix it up.

I too hope it does not go back in style. I personally prefer solids with a textured pattern and add a coordinating print for accent.

I think any bold pattern could potentially work, but you have to take into consideration the scale and design of the furniture/objects and the space itself. And just because the pattern is bold doesn't mean you have to match everything to it (smells of "safe" design)

Not a fan of either room, but would definitely prefer the top photo.

The top photo verges on insipid for me, as it feels too matchie-matchie (and a bit granny shabby chic) in its strict white/blue combo, but on the plus side, the scale of the pattern works well in relation to what appears to be a bright tall ceiling-ed room with its appropriately sized floral/table arrangements.

The bottom photo makes me feel claustrophobic. The plant is too tall and top heavy and the furniture is too bulbous and large for the room. I also don't like that the fabric appears frumpy in its quilted quality and is wrinkled on the chair back and arms.

I voted not. I'm not against it in theory, but these examples make me nauseous. It reminds me of my pink gingham bedroom as a young girl (I can't be sure my mother didn't consult me on a color - yes/no basis at the age of 3 or 4) and just everything was the same, and at least for a little while, it worked, but it was juvenile. I can imagine falling in love with a print and going wild with it now, just not these. The rooms above seem too early 80s*, kind of southern belle meets bed-in-a-bag & spawns slipcovers in the living room.

*and checking the link to find they are late 70s, as was my pink gingham themed bedroom.

That is just like my mother's living rooms (In plural, like that), I am so glad she is changing them soon. It makes a huge space look tiny, tiny.
