Hot or Not? TROLLSTA Tray Table from IKEA

11-6-trollsta-table.jpgThe flat-packing TROLLSTA table (the legs all fan out from that central wire axis) is a far cry from the Swedish simplicity IKEA has been known for in the past. It's got a lot going on. While last year's TROLLSTA Sideboards and cabinets strayed into new territory, this tray table seems...over-designed? Tim Gunn might say "That's a lot of look." Tell us what you think...

The removable metal tray sits on lacquered birch legs. The table has a diameter of 22.5" and is 17.75" tall. The TROLLSTA tray table comes in black for $100 from IKEA.

I think I'd rather get a real vintage Brass tray table from a Flea Market or eBay.

Sort of hairy spidery.

I like it...reminds me a lot of a Chair available at Ralph Lauren home that I love...

I think it'd be nice to use the base and then find a vintage tray to put on it.

I dont understand why you ask the question!

What happened to the ikea team designers? .....

The odd support bars are what really mar this effort. I suppose they must be necessary to keep the thing stable, but I can't imagine there aren't better solutions that still constitute a low cost execution.

If I see one more piece of Swedish furniture I’m going to start throwing up reindeer antlers and blue and white checked gingham.

i have mixed feelings. I agree the support bars ruin the look but its sort of an interesting piece especially from them...

Two questions come to mind:

1. Why?

2. Can I have some of what the designers were smoking?

I'm all for creativity, but not every new idea is a good one...

I noticed this table today in an Ikea email. I really did a double-take! I thought that it was awkward and odd ... It is funny that it showed up here!

I think it's really an interesting piece from a store that makes such (sometimes mind-numbingly) simple everything else. It's not my favorite, but I like it, and I applaud them doing something truly different.

I don't like it at all. But at least they are trying different things. I have never been the biggest IKEA fan, to me they are less "simple" and more "boring". Maybe this is the start of something new.

The first thing i thought of when i saw this was When Harry Met Sally...(even though above pic is not wagon wheel furniture...i still think it's hideous)

Harry: Cause someday, believe it or not, you'll go 15 rounds over who's gonna get this coffee table. This stupid, wagon-wheel, Roy Rogers, garage sale COFFEE TABLE!

Jess: I thought you said you liked it!

Harry: I WAS BEING NICE!!!

Ikea should stick with what Ikea does best. Venturing off into "traditional" looks leads to horrid mis-haps like this. I envision a wrecked spindle chair, a wire clothes hanger and an inventor on a dark night in Ikea's third basement........{shudder}

I think it could possibly look good with plainer legs. Either keep the funky crossbars, or the traditional legs (on a non-collapsible design), but not both. And yeah, fewer legs.

This reminds me of one of those christmas trees that unfold like an umbrella, what a nightmare. I am usually an Ikea fan, this is just wrong. Bad move Ikea. JMO

While I like liked th blending of modern and traditional in last year's TROLLSTA designs, this is too much.

However, I'm with whytephoenix and say that the cross braces are intriguing and a similar design with plain legs could work

It looks cluttered and unresolved as an object. Trying too hard for a vintage look, is my guess.
