Hot Trend: A Chalkboard Paint Explosion!
Email from 8.8.08

>> Karkula's shop totally chalkboarded!: We snapped this pic in Karkula a few weeks ago. Head to toe CP, with fun sketches, prices and their mission statement on the walls.

Chalkboard paint has finally crossed the line, graduated beyond children's decor and become a full on modern design trend for 2008. In the following links, I want to take you on a little tour of some really cool uses that use the matte black feeling for visual effect, and also to unleash ADULT creativity....

Also, here's a link to how to make your own. Brands mentioned the most: Benjamin Moore & Rustoleum.

>> Jane & Darko's Kitchen: Jane and Darko use CP on their kitchen cabinets to label what is stored within each.

>> Roland Emmerich's London Study: Walls and ceiling here are covered in CP and Roland's doodles run all around, including overhead.

>> Look!: Chalkboard Paint Border: This is an idea by Anastasia of Faiella Design. She uses CP as a border above wainscotting and writing as decor (we don't know what it's about!).

>> Chalkboard Paint Wall Calendar: This is from The Martha - an inventive use of CP, that has the most practical edge.

>> Chalkboard Paint Placemats: Off the wall and onto the table.

>> Magnetic Chalkboard Paint Wall: Even better when married with an magnetic undercoating!

>> Green Chalkboard Paint at Anthropologie: Green is a great alternative color and this use, while not my favorite, at least shows off the paint well.

>> Julie and Andrew's Kitchen Wall: This is nice effect. Forget writing and just rub the wall down with chalk to create an almost Venetian plaster-like effect. Remember, matte black hides wall imperfections better than anything else.

Anyone know of local NYC retailers that carry it? Sold out on Target's website...

tsp213: I bought a quart of black Rustoleum chalkboard paint at the Home Depot on 59th and Lex a few weeks ago. The Chelsea HD was sold out of the stuff but they did have "tintable" Rustoleum chalk board paint, tinting available in 12 colors if I remember correctly. I asked one of the HD employees in Chelsea about it and he said the black sells out very quickly there, so hopefully you'll have better luck on the east side. I have yet to run across gallon buckets, but I was only painting my backsplash so a quart worked perfectly. Good luck in your search!

Plaid makes 10 different colors of chalkboard paint. They are sold in 8oz containers. The paint covers a large area. This brand is water based, non-toxic and kid room friendly. You can paint onto almost any surface.

Here is a video of the paints:

I saw a bunch of colors in Pat Catan's (craft store) over by the wood/clocks/paintable stuff.

I have a chalkboard studio! I will never tire of it. I especially love finding little notes and drawings that friends sneak onto the walls when I'm busy cooking in the other room or something. Endless fun!

And Heidi ... sigh ... man, I miss Pat Catan's!

Great post and comments - I like the idea of having someplace where friends and guests can scribble their thoughts. Reminds me of that guy in Brooklyn who put Sharpie markers in his bathroom for people to write and draw on the walls and ended up with a piece of art!

This is an amazing idea! I am going to do this in my pantry to help get it organized. I bought a tintable chalkboard paint that I found at the local store. It's made by rustoleum.

The chalkboard placemat above gives me the idea of chalkboard coasters. Fun for parties, right?

Does anyone know where I can get cheap coasters that the paint would adhere to (other than the weekend-sucking, lengthy pilgrammage to Ikea)?

An allergy waiting to hit you!
The look is really reminding me of school and years worth of torture!

I used blue tape to make large block on he walls and the kids love it. I also used my finger to scrible chalk wall before it dried and it looks cool.

My Benjamin Moore store didn't have it so I found it here

Debating whether to do magnetic/CP combo on full wall in kitchen vs. purchasing large framed magnetic chalkboard. Prefer the former, but am concerned about wear and tear. Would greatly appreciate comments from those who have gone the layered magnetic/chalkboard paint route on wear and tear? Does the finish wear away with use (i.e., do I need to plan on repainting regularly?) Any tips on how to maximize longevity?
