apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Creating Space at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House
The New York Times 4.24.08

This year's Kips Bay Decorator Show House is not a townhouse — it's six apartments in the Manhattan House apartment building on East 66th Street. Built in 1950, the modernist block of apartments all feature eight-and-a-half-foot ceilings and similar boxy layouts. The twenty-two designers involved have the challenge of creating unique spaces within almost identical blank canvases. One of our favorites areas previewed by The New York Times is the banquette inspired by Turkish palaces, by Sara Bengur (above). For more inspiration, head below the jump...

We love how designer Philip Gorrivan maximized the low ceilings by covering this ceiling in a glossy stretch vinyl called Extenzo.

A closet was turned into a banquette by designer Nancy Ruddy.

i love the idea of using tin can lids as a wal covering. it would make a great backsplash in a kitchen.

I just got back after spending nearly 3 hours there. Talk about being in hog heaven. If you can go on Tuesday and Thursday late nights I highly recommend it. I can only imagine the weekend being a zoo.
