Last week, The New York Times featured a preview of this year's Kips Bay Decorator Show House. Today, they followed up the general preview with some specific details on replicating the professionals' ideas on a budget. The ideas range from inexpensive upholstery options to contrasted pairings of furniture...

The chair above was upholstered in an African Mud Cloth. A Mud cloth-style fabric is available for $5 a yard at Yara International on 125th Street.

Designer Jeff Lincoln covered walls in corrugated paper that was lacquered with seven coats of paint. The Times suggests buying rolls of corrugated paper from uline.com and leaving them uncoated.

Real mudcloth is actually quite pricey.

The caption from the picture of that chair:
" Louis IX style chair, bought at a Paris flea market, was upholstered in African mud cloth â an unlikely choice of fabric, but one that makes this chair fit into a modern interior."
OK, it's a nice chair but I have one question for Ms Rohrlich:
Who the hell is Louis IX?

Has nothing to do w/that chair, though.

The chair would be more in keeping with Louis XV (mid-eighteenth c.)

Yes, ebrown, that was in fact my real point: not that I didn't know who Louis IX was--or how to use Google--but that this chair has absolutely nothing to do with him.
One would hope that somebody at the NYT's Home & Garden section would realize that.
Or maybe it's just that all those Roman numerals all look alike.

I'm so glad you featured that chair by BKH. It was my favorite piece of furniture in this year's show house (also loved the Extenzo ceiling by Philip Gorrivan). I thought their room stood out from the usual over-designed Kips Bay offerings.
