apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

House & Home Roundup: 7.13.06

7-17--people.jpgPeople, people, people. That seems to to be one of the new themes that shapes H&H...that and getting out of NYC.

The Russians to the left, Mira Apraxine and Nikolai Druzin, are part of the new interior design craze in Moscow, having just redone their apartment with fab finds from NYC (of all places). This is the top story this week.

  • For Russian Style, an Extreme Makeover: It may not be design you want to copy, but BOY is there a lot of money going into Russian interiors right now. This is a great inside peek at this new rush for a hip home in the former Soviet Union.

am i the only one who thought the lawn garden article was really smarmy? i mean, they practically accused the people in the article of being anti-american for deciding to forgo the traditional suburban lawn... if you didn't think we had regressed to the 50's, you'll believe it after reading that article.

I dunno -- the lawn article seemed pretty mild, as far as NYT H&G smarminess goes. The quotes by the academics on the social history of lawn were perhaps more lawn-positive than they would have been a decade ago, but that's all I noticed.

It is always so strange to read articles about Russia. What new craze? Russia is the birthplace of constructivism, for God’s sake! This interior design "thing" was going on for quite a while. There are so many interior designers/architects in Russia who have been alive and well for years. The magazines that they mention in the article are all Western ones, but how about local Russian magazines? I used to go there and pick up copies of Salon Magazine ( www.salon.ru) in the early 90s. They had a section on the homes of artists and architects that was just amazing, contemporary and creative. Yes, there are always clients who request a little Hermitage in their two-bedroom Khrushchev era apartments ( inspired, by the way, by NYC Projects) , but same goes for the homes of American nouveau riches, doesn’t it? :-)
