apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Have you dreamed of living in a turret room? How about a three-floor turret apartment across the street from Central Park? I have a good friend who lives near New York's first Cancer Hospital on the Upper West Side — after passing the empty building for years, it was a pleasant surprise to see an apartment featured in The New York Times. Built in the 1880's, the building has changed drastically in the last decade. Now, the large round towers of the former hospital are high-end luxury homes, giving the lucky owners a chance to attempt furnishing round rooms...

More Than One Revival in a Manhattan Ruin explains Cynthia and Dan Lufkin's unique attachment to their home in the chapel of the former cancer hospital (she is a cancer survivor). The detailed renovation takes advantage of the 38-foot ceilings (!) and pays homage to the history of the space...

So happy to see that building finally being renovated - I remember passing it about 20 years ago and wondering about it. At some point I found out about it's history as a cancer hospital but I'm deighted to see people living there.

Round-cornered buildings are very common on the UWS, but the diameter of the circle is usually much smaller than this.

I live in just such a corner (about 14 ft across with a 10x11 rectangle attached) and I thought it was fun when I first found the apartment, but have found it very limiting when it comes to arranging furniture...

I used to live a block away from this complex while it was being built/refurbished and was very impressed with the final exterior once they were done. Now I'm even more impressed with the interiors! Gorgeous. I do wonder though... are the original hospital buildings haunted? Would be interesting to know if anyone hears or sees odd things around there.

Not quite as enthusiastic as Sleek, but like Kat1, I always wanted to live in a castle.

This reminds me of a "stuffier" version of the bohemian apartment in the movie Uptown Girls!

Lucky bastards! I love the building and the rooms if not their rather pedestrian sense of style.

Having grown up just 3 blocks from that building, I used to wonder what would become of it and was always afraid it would be torn down.
Nice to see it being lived in after decades of abandonment.

I think this apartment is great for its architecture only, and that the furnishings would definitely not have made it onto this site on their own.

What a jaw-dropping architectural gem.
What I could do with a space like this...
