NYT: Pearl Lam's Shanghai Loft
House & Home Roundup 12.20.07

Her kitchen may make you dizzy but Pearl Lam is credited for boosting Chinese contemporary art and design to the attention of international dealers. She is obsessed with the blending of cultures through design and her 9,700-square-foot loft in Shanghai's French Concession neighborhood only proves this. Described as "a Chinese version of Pee-wee's playhouse", the extravagant home highlights her collections of private commissions and over-the-top embellishments. See what it's like At Home With Pearl Lam: A Shanghai Auntie Mame...

The kitchen reminds me of Siggi Eggertsson's new coke ad that I just saw yesterday!..I think I prefer the look on paper:

A bomb - hardly anyone cooks in Shanghai. Everyone has an "Auntie" that cooks and cleans. Labor is super inexpensive because there are so many people. I'm sure Pearl Lam has an entire staff.

Wow-a 9700 sqft funhouse! It just needs some slanted floors & a few warped mirrors.

Ok...as scary as this looks...trust me when I say what passes for good taste in most parts of Asia would approve of this. It really is only missing more gilded gold stuff, faux Versailles furniture, and supremely expensive but fugly furniture. Oh wait...Maybe she DID include all that.

Sad to say, money didn't equate with taste either in her case. But kudos for trying WAY WAY WAY too hard.
