Name: James and Margaret
Home then: Midtown 1960's building, 565 sqft. studio
Home now: new 1-bdrm in same building
This week we check in on James and Margaret. They are all about change--new apartment and new baby--since we visited them for the making of our latest book, Apartment Therapy Presents: Real Homes, Real People, Hundreds of Design Solutions
.
James and Margaret love to update in major ways. They completely transformed their last home. Now they've moved upstairs to a larger apartment and have made it a priority to carve out a private room for their growing toddler.

James has built a mock-up of the dividing wall for an improvised bedroom. He plans to build the wall out of plywood, sheathed in plywood and covered with bakelite tiles to add shine and depth to the surface. The living room side will have recessed shelves for all media needs plus a wall garden that is only 3 inches deep. On the baby's bedroom side, the wall will contain fully built-in storage.

The baby's bedroom is only about 5.5' wide so James didn't want to completely close off the space. Alongside the wall will be two curtains to visually separate the space. Adjacent to this new bedroom is an existing closet that James now uses as his office.

Moving forward, James and Margaret hope to take on the kitchen and fully renovate it from it's current 1964 status. Other than that, they will likely add a wall of millwork in the bedroom to create more storage space. Whatever order they choose, based on past performance, we have no doubt that James and Margaret's new home will shine with individuality, great quality, and fine design.

I'm amazed that this is working, because my baby won't sleep if he can hear us moving around. We're moving into a loft soon and we're trying to figure out how to partition off his bedroom. I've been lobbying for a fully enclosed room while my husband wants a setup similar to this. Hm, maybe it would work after all...

let me correct kdkaboom - "This is going to be REALLY cool!!"
I am looking at the same solution to partition off a bedroom in my new place. Can we request a full DIY write-up?

I loved what they did with their former space, and I'm kind of happy for "the world" that they sold the other one, because whoever they sold it to probably wouldn't have been able to come up with that kind of design but will be able to benefit from it.
And now they're going to spread their genius on to this next place. I'm really looking forward to seeing the results.
