Bridget's Clean & Current in North Brooklyn
House Call

(We're trying out some of the best applicants from our New York Blogger Search — this House Call comes from applicant Judy Brown.)

Name: Bridget Henry
Location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn NYC

The challenges of Bridget's space are few. It's a bit on the narrow side, so furniture placement is limited, the landlord won't allow tenants to paint, and she's on a busy street with quite a bit of truck traffic.... but who cares! The ceiling's are high, there's plenty of storage, bright sunny windows, and she's got a lovely backyard that she shares with the neighbors...

The look is clean, and stylized. Sticking with an almost monotone color scheme of creams, beiges, and browns, she added touches of ebony and orange to add some weight and earthiness . She gave it all some dimension by piling on the texture — there's leather, wood, linen, glass, wool, horn, crisp cotton, silk, and metal. The decor hits all eras too — primitives, victorian, mid century modern, 70's lucite, and present day contemporary. Keeping everything meticulously edited allows it to all melt together cohesively. Take a look!

wonderful post and wonderful home. I think a mirror and a few more pieces of art on the walls in the narrow living room would widen it visually.

Judy, you're writing style is great--very clear and concise while still providing a lot of info, all in your voice. Good luck!

I see some of the "right" pieces, but I'm not wowed. It looks a bit "generic meets half-done" to me. Sorry!

Great post! Just wondering though, did you mean to say that 'the challenges are many'?

Really nice post. But could we have a picture of the kitchen/dining area glimpsed in the first picture, instead of the picture of a shelf?

I really like the little living room, it's my favorite part. I love the use of stools! I'm on a natural wood kick lately, and am glad they haven't been painted some bright color or something. But one note: on the bed, I feel like you need at least one more tufted pillow to really pull off the 'tufted-headboard-by-way-of-tufted-pillows' look. But otherwise, very clean and calm. This a 'Sunday Morning' (breakfast in bed, sunlight streaming in, NY times crossword) kind of apartment.

That couch accentuates the narrowness of the space. If it doesn't fit horizontally, I would lose it. It certainly is a challenging room.

I love the apartment and the photos are great, but ceilings not "ceiling's" and '70s not "70's." Sorry, total pet peeves.

I think it is sweet and tidy. Would love to see better photos of the kitchen.

Wow, it really is narrow! Did the writer mean that the problems are few, or that there are a few problems! :-)
The problems do seem to be nicely solved with minimal, clean line, quality furniture
