apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

David & Sean’s Cozy Mid-Century
House Call

(We're trying out some of the best applicants from our New York Blogger Search — this House Call comes from applicant Geoff Bentz.)

Who Lives Here? David & Sean plus dogs Emit & Schmoopy
Location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn NYC

Located in the heart of Williamsburg on Berry Street, David and Sean found amazing potential behind an unassuming façade. This 2 bedroom, 1,000 square foot apartment is full of bright light and whimsical touches. Owner of the nearby Modest Designs, an antique and mid-century modern furniture store, David describes their home as a rotating gallery. As he puts it, “Our home is like an extension of our shop. We’re constantly swapping out pieces.” But don’t feel like you can’t put your feet up on their Noguchi coffee table...

The apartment is surprisingly comfortable with offbeat touches like framed comic book art and plenty of greenery. Sean’s favorite space? His rooftop garden filled with brightly colored planters he picked up at Home Depot.

The most well-written of the submissions so far. Nicely done.

I love the comic book art.

It's also great to see a wonderful oriental rug being used instead of a flokati or faux zebra.

I agree, the writing is great!

However, I found that the photographs don't really show off the character of the house as well as they could. For example, maybe you could have switched out the exterior shot for one of a bedroom or taken the photo of the bookshelf at a wider angle to add a second living room shot. I think the living room is great, and wish that I got a better sense of the space from the photos.

Impressive...I walk by those buildings all the time and never would have guessed such a nice space could exist with in.

Big fan of all the North Brooklyn house calls in the past few days; I love getting a glimpse into the spaces that exist around me, keep them coming!

What a beautiful home - I'd enjoy reading more of their writing.

I see that their end-tables are posted on 1st-Dibs already...
...I'd have major trouble being in their business since I grow so attached to the vintage pieces that I collect for my own home.

I think Geoff has a lot of potential as a new AT blogger (his writing style is nice), but this tour was a bit underwhelming. The apartment doesn't have a whole lot of character--maybe because the owners are constantly rotating things in and out. I don't know--maybe it's the photos. I just didn't see much inspiration here.
