House Call: BlondeinBrooklyn on a Budget

Name: BlondeinBrooklyn
Location: Cobble Hill, Brooklyn

My recent gut renovation of my kitchen was pulled together for less than $5000 (appliances included) proving that you don't have to spend a fortune to pull together a great looking kitchen. This philosophy extends to the rest of my (600 sq. ft.) 1 bedroom apartment as well...proving that there are no limits when it comes to mixing eBay finds with big box pieces — and all on small budget.

Thanks BlondeinBrooklyn!

We've had amazing response to our Apartment Therapy House Tour Submission Form that we launched last month. While we will work with homeowners of our favorite homes to feature full tours, we will also share the best as House Calls — short, quick tours of readers' homes. Submit your home here.

The apartment looks great! I love the light fixture in the living room. Could recommend whoever did your electrical work? I'm getting ready to do some renovation on my apartment in Cobble Hill and am looking for a good electrician.

Lovely, and much more inspiring because it's the product of the real-world budgetary challenges many of us face. Congratulations on a beautiful home!

From your design budget and results, we can see that blondes do have brains . . . and more fun! Great job! Can you tell us what you did and a rough idea of the cost?

Where do the colorful bowls with feathers/leaves on them (in the kitchen) come from?

The kitchen looks fantastic, as does the rest of the apartment! Where did you get your couch? I've been searching for something exactly like that!

Great place. Please source those back splash tiles--are they striped? Love them!

happiness, I've seen similar bowls at http://threepotatofourshop.com. Search "bowls." (Then get thyself to ebay)

What a pleasant, bright and inviting apartment! Everything makes sense. It feels peaceful. That small magenta chair makes the living room. And good choice on the kitchen cabinet handles -- I have the same ones....

Funny question, but is that north light streaming in?

Hi all,

Thanks for your comments.

To Led - The chandelier in the living room was purchased at Lumens.com. The style is "Kimono" by George Kovacs.

To happiness- The bowls are vintage Catherine Holm "lotus" enamelware bowls. I've amassed quite a collection --- all found on eBay. Search "catherineholm" or "catherine holm".

To Decordiva - LOL - thanks! I gut renovated the kitchen - replacing everything. The key was finding the ikea cabinets that i liked and (cabinets hardware ran less than $1000) expensive looking tile for the backsplash. I had originally fallen in love with Angela Adams hand painted tile ($70 sq/ft) but quickly came to love this tile which was $8 sq/ft. I also got a great deal on the Silestone counter ($600) and all the appliances. I used A.J. Madison.

To MyHeroZero - the couch is from...Macy's!...I was shocked myself. It's the "Corona Sofa" and is on sale now!

Blonde, it looks fantastic. I'm a Cobble Hiller myself and would love to know where you got the stove/microwave combo. Also, do you happen to have a floorplan somewhere? Would love to see the birds-eye view. Great job!

Cineman - The stove was actually there when I moved in - I just bought the microwave/convection oven which is a GE Profile Spacemaker® XL1800 Microwave Oven from AJ Madison.com. Unfortunately I don't have a floorplan.

ValHalla - the tiles they are produced by Crossville Tile from the "Colorblox Too" line - the model is "Chopsticks" - I purchased them from Nemo Tile in Manhattan.

On the site you'll see them positioned vertically but I hung the tiles with the stripes going horizontal.

The Graduate - I got the coffee table at Crate and Barrel two years ago. I think they, or CB2, might still have a similar version.

Alice42 - Yes, I got the console from the Company Store.

Lovely. Re-doing my co-op in Queens. Love the soft beige wall color especially in the photo outside the kitchen with the console. Can you tell me the name of the color?

Why can't I see more than the 5 pics underneath the main picture? This is not the regular house tour format but whatever it is isn't working on my mac.

Transplanted - Its an antique - I bought it on eBay -- I got a great deal because there are minor flaws. Take a look on eBay - try using the search terms Eames, Retro or Swedish modern sideboard or credenza.

Geraldinerd - The color is actually more yellow than beige - its called "Straw" by Benjamin Moore - good luck with your reno!

Inza - This is what's called a "House Call" --- I had submitted for a house tour with additional pics but they chose just to do a short feature. If asked I'd be happy to share more pics!

What a good use of small space! My friend just moved to Cobble Hill and is considering that sofa as well. What color is yours and how is it holding up? Is it comfortable for lounging? For that price, I may get one for my place too!

Sammyq - I must admit it was quite a find! The color is chocolate brown and is holding up well. Macy's actually has an insurance that you can buy and if you spill anything on it you can get a replacement.

This is so cute and sweet. I really like how you have the curtains, but left yourself the option of also being able to use the shade. Great idea.
