The main problem I've had to overcome with my space is being a split personality! I love mid-century modern — and I also love old things, and wanted to showcase my various collections throughout the house. As my apartment is small (about 900 square feet), I was able to give the space a unifying feel by using a few key colors — sage green, black and white — throughout. Yet, each room manages to have its own look and feel. I also wanted to show that, contrary to prevailing belief on AT, that Mission-style furniture CAN blend beautifully with more modern pieces.

such great light. and what a great bedroom to walk into!

Utterly charming. Very nicely put together. Bravo!

900 sq ft for an apartment?!! I wish I lived in an apartment that large. : (

I love the 50s dinner table, I have a similar one, oval in blue and similar chairs.
The bedroom looks pretty inviting, I still don't know if I like the two styles put together, but still nice at the end.

Does anyone know where can I find a rocking chair like that? We are looking for something to rock our soon-to-arrive little one in, and I trying to steer far far away from gliders.

@HandmadeLove -
Jennifer's is probably antique, but depending on your budget, Stickley is the pinnacle - http://www.stickley.com/OurProducts_Details.cfm?id=1394&Collection=Mission&cat1=88&view=all&view=complex&finish=
Alternatively, most big furniture stores will have something in the same style. The wood will be cheaper and finished badly, and the joints will be glued and screwed, but it'll look similar.

Your bedroom is adorable! I have an extreme case of the split personality decor style as well. I feel your pain. But your place looks very nice :)

Handmade, I just saw this type of Arts&Crafts rocker and chair in an antique shop!
Beautiful place, I especially appreciate that the furniture does not clash with the building style.

Handmade,
Antiques shops often have this type of chair. I snagged one for $50 last summer because it needed a tiny (and easy) repair. It's super comfortable for rocking a little one (which many antique rocking chairs are not. Windsors especially - ouch.)

P.S. I forgot to say how much I like Jennifer's house. It's a wonderful mix of old and new.

OOO! My Mom has that rocking chair. It is an antique found in my Grandmothers basement. She has matching chairs too. They are so very comfortable... and heavy.

Nice place! Mission is the "granddaddy" of modern. I think they play nicely together, in the right proportions. I'm selling my rocker almost identical to that one. (Don't mean to spam but this is relevant.)

Very well done "exercice de style"
The bedroom is too girly for my taste but the B-52 poster is to die for...

So happy to see this post. Makes me feel good about having a house full of atomic 50s and space-age 60s pieces juxtaposed with mission-style (though not antique) couch/love seat. And I agree with Yul--that poster is fantastic and looks so great over that table. Jealous!

Count me among those who can totally relate to the split-decor-personality, and also among those who want to see more... I love it so far!

I forgot to add that the window in your bedroom is lovely!

The painting in the picture of the rocking chair is beautiful!

The quilt I bought--it was made by Pine Cone Hill. You can find them on the internet--although they are making it in a new color combination I don't really care for.
Thanks for all your kind comments--and for not mentioning the obvious "compromise" of putting the TV in front of my big painting (old family heirloom). It was one of those cases where there was no other place to put the TV--due to wiring issues, etc. But I took great care to get the height, overlap relationship just right--kind of "juxtaposing" old and new art...

I need to add one thing...the vintage toaster used to belong to Joseph Albers.

it looks sort of incoherent to me

A great source of these Mission rocking chairs is www.joenevo.net

It's eclectic, kitschy, and homey, but it's not modern. A shabby chic wrought iron bed is not modern and the kitchen table is retro, but I still like it ;-)

Most of these things were modern at one time ;-)

I think the second picture is very good, however I would like to see more of the living room....
