Trying to keep up with the Smiths and the Jones'es. Two things happen in a Nevada desert: one, you cannot escape dust storms, which infiltrate the very pores of you sleeping bag, and two, it is very, very, very hot (during the day). So you need a home that is airy enough to be cool during the day and yet tight as a drum to keep out the dust.
We lost. Our lightweight summer tent had to be dusted out each day. Even the RV's and the heavier tents didn't fare well. The best homes were the round ones, the yurty ones, the cool ones.
