Name: Liz
Location: Gramercy, NYC
Size: 1Bedroom, Appx 800 Sq Ft
Years lived in: 1 year
Rented or Owned: Rents
Who else lives here? Husband, Michael, Son, Ben, Dog, Jed

2-23-housetourlogo.jpgMany of you will already know Liz’s flare for design from her work for Domino and Gramercy Tavern. If not, check out her website www.cantaloupeisland.com... the “about” section, where she illustrates all her favorite things, always makes me smile. Liz’s apartment in Gramercy inspires me in the same way. The mid-century modern furniture and curated choice of color ground the space, while the framed art, books, sculptures and toys provide charm and warmth...

Take a look in Liz’s bedroom, where she has created calm with a simple white, blue and earthy color scheme, and you realize how well she edits the room to make sure it feels crisp yet relaxing. The animals on the side table even get the color brief.

Liz and her husband, Michael, built their son’s room from scratch, designing a modern and playful crib. They even drilled all the peek holes (I thought they bought the wood like that). Impressive DYI.

Typical of her domino roots, Liz’s AT Survey is choc-o-block with resources. She’s always introducing me to so many great things in NYC, so have fun exploring her links. Cheers, Liz. Liz’s next big splurge will be a new sofa, so if you have any ideas for stylish sectionals she’d love to hear about your resources.

SURVEY

Your style? Modern Charm

Greatest inspiration? All mediums inspire me — people, architecture, design, art … all of them individually and the combination. There are so many innovative people today that understand the importance creating designs that are above all functional yet very pleasing to the eye. Anything that makes my life easier, I love. Other moms help too. Oh, working at domino helps. We work with a lot of great homes. You can see illustrations of all my favorite things and inspirations on my website at www.cantaloupeisland.com

Favorite element? I love my bedroom. I used a very sweet turquoise, lots of whites and muted earth tones and lots of fun textures like marble, fur, wool and yarn. Also, there is not a lot of stuff in there which I love. It is calming which I need living and working in New York.

Biggest challenge of your home? I wish I had more DYI skills to complete a few projects hiding in closets. I have wallpaper for the bedroom still waiting to go up, a pendant lamp to be wired and shelves that need to be built. I can never find enough space for all my books, which is a real challenge when living in NYC apartments.

What do friends say? They always want to pull ideas. A lot of people want to copy the curtains in the bedroom. I got the fabric on sale at the D&D building while tagging along with my Mom, an established interior designer. Also, everyone wants to know the paint color. I always use it because it changes shades with the light and the furniture. My sister and mom both use it often too. It’s Benjamin Moore, Artists Canvas.

Biggest Embarrassment? The home office, behind the sofa has become a storage space.

Proudest DIY? Ben’s crib. We bought the wood, drilled all the wholes into it, added the hinges so it could transition into a big boy’s bed and painted it red. It was satisfying seeing it all come together and knowing I do have some DYI skills.

Biggest Indulgence? Art and Eames chairs … next indulgence will be a sofa.

Best Advice? Take your time. You make better decisions when you’ve lived in the space and have a clear mind. Also, take the time to visit thrift stores in your neighborhood, eventually you will find many great treasures. Gramercy Thrift Shops ….

City Opera Thrift Shop 222 E 23rd St between Second and Third Aves (212-684-5344)
Housing Works 157 E 23rd St between Lexington and Third Aves (212-529-5955);
Vintage Thrift Shop 286 Third Ave between 22nd and 23rd Sts (212-871-0777)
Calvary/St. George’s Thrift Shop 61 Gramercy Park N at Gramercy Park W (212-475-2674)

Dream Source? Scandinavian Flea Market and DWR.

Other Inspiration? Friends, artists, graphic designers, family, the city. I can find inspiration from just about anything.

Love how her son's toys fit so seamlessly into the design concept. It looks thought-out but not too intentional, very homey.

the red apple print is from Kid O... if you google "Kid O" it will take you to their shop... click "shop by environment" and then select "bedroom" :) I just looked it up myself!

I also need to know about that grey blanket on the bed, and the paint color! Also can't find!

I really liked the bedroom in this place, and the whole apartment looks really lived in but nicely designed.

jen_g - The Love print is an Alexander Girard design.

I really love seeing all the mismatched frames hung together in the first photo. I'm a bit bothered by the unframed pieces hung with the framed ones, and I wonder if using bold clips and floating the unframed pieces a bit off the wall to give them more of a shadow, would maybe give the whole composition a more finished look. Other than that, it looks like a great home!

i'm shamelessly adding to my source request:

still NEED to know where the grey and white blanket is from.

and now i'm smitten by that underwear print in the first pic... who did that? love it.

what a beautiful home. it isn't over-the-top design or over-the-top unafforable... great ideas here for anyone. so cozy... a family actually LIVES here :)

ATers,

I'm keeping a list of all your questions and will get answers from Liz at the end of the day and post the answers by tomorrow morning.

closertotheocean,

I have a feeling that blanket was a one of a kind find. I vaguely remember talking to Liz about.

I love the paint in the bedroom - I love how the white frame pops against the cool grey walls...

not to be a nitpicker, but did you mean "flair", Amy?

Now the slideshow isn't working, at least for me. I get an error when I try to get to the second picture.

ART OVER BED is an Oliver Warden. It is a video game frame blown-up. It was a gift for Liz’s husband who loves video games.

UNDERWEAR PRINT is Hugo Guinness from John Darien. The lady bug, safety pin and care are all Hugo Guinness. I’m a big fan too, saving up for one.

PAINT COLOR is Artist Canvas but Benjamin Moore discontinued but Janovic has the color on file under the number 710-12 and they can still mix it for you, just talked to them.

BED COVER is Design Within Reach but years ago.

RED BOOKSHELVES is Hold Everything but I don’t think they stock it anymore.

Thanks for all the comments. Cheers, Amy

Like the way you pulled different elements into each pic to make space more interesting & stylish but also reflective of their family life. Nice job.

I like that it's family friendly. The little white shelves in the kids room and the bathroom graphics are delightful, and the chalkboard wall. I would have loved them as a kid.

I agree with fabframes. those unframed pieces drive me a little nuts in that little bundle of framed art. And that one blank space in the corner is driving me nuts! Just put one more picture there. For my sanity!

Seems a little hodgepodge, but not in a funky and fun way . More like the 'this is what was in my aunt sally's attic, and all we had to furnish with' way. A little more cohesion. A few pieces that match in color or style would go a long way in any of these rooms.

I'd like to see more of the bathroom then just the decals. it looks fun.

Liz, Thank you so much for featuring my artwork in your home. it was brought to my attention by my friend Josephine and it really made my day. That work thematically is about the edges of video game worlds. You can see more examples of it at my website, www.robotbigfoot.com.

If anyone is interested in purchasing my artwork they can find larger versions at my gallery http://www.ohtgallery.com/ or for smaller versions and the opportunity to benefit AIDS research, please check out A.C.R.I.A.'s art gallery, https://www4003.ssldomain.com/DomainID159845/store/store_artwork.asp

And over your bed too! I'm honored!

Oliver Warden aka ROBOTBIGFOOT
