House Tour: Malcolm's Nantucket Bungalow

10-12-mister1.jpg

We received this email from Malcolm, who is an artist and designer living in a 1300 sf bungalow on Nantucket. This home is the result of renovating a small house and adding an addition. The pics are amazing. This is no salty shack. (Thanks, Malcolm!)

"It's one floor with a small loft overlooking the kitchen. The floor has a bedroom, living room and kitchen. There is a basement [700 sq feet] that I'm finishing with 2 more bedrooms and full bath. The house is solar powered making my domestic hot water and also radiant heat in winter. The solar makes only hot water, not electricity.

"I've been living in it for a little over a year after renovating the house for 18 months. I've been collecting some original retro furniture and just got a sectional couch from the late '70s in mint condition. Nantucket has strict building codes for the exterior so I couldn’t get to modern on the outside, but the house is like a big open loft on the inside.

I read your blog daily and it helps inspire me with my house.

Enjoy, thanks"
Malcolm

I like the kitchen - looks very airy and the colour choice is very interesting and unique! Nice ceiling fan!

Sweet! What is the color on the kitchen wall? Who is the artist of the United States print?

I would LOVE to see an exterior shot. Having summered on the island twice, I can imagine exactly what it looks like. God, I miss that place.

Fabulous job!

I'm very curious about the ship's ladder that you're using to get to the loft. Can you recommend a source for those? How do you feel about its stability/ease of use?

wow, im shocked to have my house in here and all this great feed back. thanks!

the bedroom is an old shot. i will take a new photo since i am posted in here and upload tomorrow.

i have 2 monitors now, yes i need to organize my cables.

the flying man painting was done by me 15 years ago. i did a series of them and sold most. there is another in the bedroom.

the ships ladder came from the original 750 squ foot house [the only thing kept] there is a bed up in the loft for guests. i want to get a sleeper couch up there.

i have lots of exterior shots on main flickr site http://www.nantucketbungalow.com . if you look at my "tags" you can see all the photos broken down into catagories. if look at "original" u can see what it was and condition.

the house was done on a low budget, i shopped around online for everything. flooring, butcherblock, fans, appliances, etc...

planiing to do alot more on the property and will have a hot tub heateed with my solar panel. the grounds will be very asian/japanese.

its a work in progress...

thanks for all the nice comments!

I love your coffee table. It is so beautiful. It is exactly what I am looking for. Did you make it yourself? Also what kind of wood is the coffee table made from and was it very expensive.

the coffee table is made from a slab of 2" walnut by my dad. the walnut came from a tree in our yard. i forget the exact color of the kitchen. its a benjamin moore color. the living room is medieval green and the bedroom brazilian blue. the kitchen towel with monkey is from an ex gf who was japanese...
