House Tour: Michelle's Starter Home

michelle ch02.JPG

Name: Michelle

Location: Chelsea

Size: 450 Sqft. 1-bdrm owned condo

Years lived in: 3 months

Michelle started from scratch. From a share, to her parents' house, to a sublet and finally here to start her own home, Michelle wanted to do everything right this time...

michelle ch27.JPG

Michelle created a foundation of neutral tones, adding strategic bursts of color via accessories that she could replace when she tired of them. Having lived in Chelsea before, Michelle was very familiar with the home design stores in the neighborhood. She used these local resources, almost exclusively, to furnish her home.

To personalize the space, Michelle made a few elements by hand, added plants wherever possible, and painted, painted, painted. There was a lot of elbow grease that went into transforming it from a generic one-bedroom with very little light. Not only did Michelle put in a lot of time and energy, she enlisted her mom to help in the larger carpentry projects!

The slideshow says it all! From stark and lifeless to warm and designed, Michelle achieved success through hard work and diligent research--not to mention the ability to keep plants looking beautiful without sun?!

Michelle's Survey:

Style: Modern comfort with Michee's own personal flair

Inspiration: Even though I’m not a huge fan of reality TV shows, I was quite inspired by HGTV's Design Star and Bravo's Top Design. Watching other people take on the challenge of transforming living spaces helped me learn about what I liked and what I would do differently.

Favorite Element: The "transformer" tables! The solid wood dining table is perfect for discretely stashing my mini-bar and the rotating glass coffee table is like functional art.

Biggest Challenge: Maximizing the small space by not overwhelming it with too much "stuff". Whether or not to keep the decorative fireplace was under much debate, but in the end I decided that it added an element of warmth to the living room.

What Friends Say: "Cozy, comforting, and delightful - obviously occupied by someone who enjoys style but knows what 'home' means. If I had this place in the city I’d never go out!"

Biggest Embarrassment: The twiggy floor plant that is slowly going bald in the corner of my living room. Anyone have any tips on an easy-to-care-for floor plant that requires low sunlight? (And don’t say get a fake one!)

Proudest DIY: I painted the entire apartment myself, which included long excruciating hours of priming and painting all the door frames and moldings. I’m also equally proud of a few smaller DIY’s in the bedroom, such as the painted canvas panel artwork, reupholstered ottomans, fabric bulletin boards, and wood covering for the boiler in the closet.

Biggest Indulgence: The beautiful solid wood bed (by Baronet), plush mattress, and Egyptian cotton sheets. I decided to splurge on the bed since my absolute guiltiest pleasure is sleeping in.

Best Advice: Thoughtful planning is a great way to kick start your project, but don’t try to do everything at once! Sometimes even taking exact measurements won’t account for how everything will fit together in the end. On the other hand, if you see an item you really love, don’t delay in purchasing it because, as I’ve learned, it may not always be available.

Dream Source: The dozens of modern home furniture shops throughout Chelsea. I spent several weekends--prior to the closing of my new home--just walking around the neighborhood!

lovely! re: plants. i was told by a horticulturist recently to pick up a ZZ plant. he said they're the most low-light, low-water tolerating plants known to woman. i've also found most ivy plants quite fine with my bad-plant-mommy ways.

Cute apartment! Seems like a home... not a show room. exactly the feelings I want for my new apartment.... I guess I have two months to keep up w/ you.

I love the colours that you chose for your living room and love the idea of keeping larger furniture neutral so that you can change accents/colour schemes when you feel it. Overall, I think it's a great place.

I also live in a small space and am in dire need to find a dining room table that expands from seating 2 (maybe 4) to six people. I have a long hallway (approx 22 feet long) that turns the corner at one end of my apartment. I would like to turn this small open space area into a dining area since it is off the kitchen anyways... however since it is an extension of my hallway, the table can not be that large when not expanded. Michelle, where did you get your table from? It seems like it would be a good fit for my apartment. Also, if anyone has any suggestions, please post. All help would be appreciated. Thanks.

This looks great! You did an excellent job in selecting the furniture for your house. It is all very functional and the proportions work well in the space. It all looks comfortable too! The curtains in the bedroom look great, and I don't think it was a bad call to keep the fireplace - it looks good with the way you've arranged the room. Amazing how different something can look with a little paint (mirror over fireplace). It was worth your time and energy to include the personal touches, it looks like a wonderful place to call home and I bet your friends want to hang out there all the time!

WOW!!! I am blown away by the overwhelming positive response. Thanks so much for all your kind words. Now to answer some of the most burning questions...

The dining table is from Jensen-Lewis. It is imported from Denmark and made of solid wood. Besides the side that slides out, you can also lift up the "middle" panel for additional storage, good for wine bottles. That top panel can be flipped over for a metal side, so that you don't ruin the wood if you want to place hot objects on the table. It's a tad expensive but totally worth it.
http://www.jensen-lewis.com/product.php?pid=00000942

The curtain panels in the bedroom are from IKEA. I absolutely love these panels because they come in so many different colors and patterns and are so easy to personalize! The sage green curtains on the side, however, are from West Elm. I got those on sale from the site. You can buy little hooks from IKEA that attach to any curtain and can slide into the bracket system.
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/range/10374/10702/

The dish rack in the kitchen is also from IKEA. Also wonderful because you can make this as long or short as you want, and add as much or little to the bar as you like! They have different styles but this is part of the Asker series.
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/series/09945/

I will keep checking back to answer any more questions! And thank you to those who provided suggestions on the floor plant. =)

OH! And the comments about the lamp...I love it as well and if you find out who the manufacturer is, please post it here! This was a housewarming gift from my aunt, who picked it up in Home Goods also!

chrisvilayke - I closed on the apartment on 10/9 and had my housewarming party on 11/3, so it pretty much went from bare bones to 90% finished in about 4 weeks! (I know that is a little bit crazy, but the OCD in me had to get it done quickly so I could feel at "home" as soon as possible.) I will say, however, that I started planning a vision for the place about a month earlier, selecting paint colors and furniture and sketching out some layouts. Plus I had been watching a lot of HGTV all summer to get myself mentally ready and prepped! The first week was the hardest - all the painting and cleaning - but by the end of the week my furniture was moved in (coordinated 3 places to have the movers all come on the same day) and it was really starting to come together. The remaining weeks were pretty much for embellishments and personal touches. Thank you for the positive feedback!

Oh, one question though: I'm trying to decide whether to buy a glass coffee table (a cheaper knock off of this one: http://www.highbrowfurniture.com/tables/products/noguchi/?add=249289) or one that incorporates storage (this one: http://eq3.com/cat-eq3/process/locale/en_CA/currency/en_CA/4010-030-1.html ). Glass doesn't give you space to hide things, but it does create more visual space in the room. How do you feel about your glass table??

Deeliscoius - thanks so much for your kind words. Regarding the coffee table, the EXACT same thoughts went through my head when I was selecting my furniture. I initially wanted a dark solid wood coffee table with storage so I could tuck away magazines and the remote controls, but after evaluating the size of the space (and listening to the wise words of my dad that glass would work best), I decided to go with the glass table and I love it. I love this one in particular because it's also a conversational piece whenever people come over. Definitely one of the three most pricey items in the apartment. (The other 2 most expensive items were the dining table the the bed, all purchased from Jensen-Lewis.)

I would explore a little more with the glass coffee table, since the one you're considering is a bit over-used (I see it everywhere!) That is, unless you absolutely love it, in which case you should totally go for it! Glass is also much easier to clean in my opinion - spray on a little windex and voila! But overall, I would say that it makes a huge impact on the visual space, so I would definitely recommend glass. =)

BTW - for all of you who are interested in the functionality of the dining table...I know the price tag is a little bit scary, but I first noticed this "transformer" design at IKEA. I loved that it had all this storage and was such a space saver, but unfortunately it only came in one color and it didn't go with my overall look. However, it's considerably cheaper and it's made of natural solid wood, unlike most IKEA furniture that is made up of particle board.

A fellow wii user with a small living room! I love your set-up, but what do you do with the lovely glass coffee table when everyone comes over to play?

Since we purchased our Wii, our extra tables went into storage. It just leaves more space for extra company with flailing arms, and less injuries! We are still working on pulling our living room together. We have a large TV and love having people over to play, but not everyone we invite is coming over to play. We like to have a more formal space at times too. I think you have struck a nice balance here. Thanks for the inspiration!

christinatremill - Thanks! The candleholder on the wall is actually from Crate and Barrel, but I've seen the one from CB2 as well. It's very similar to this one but I think it's about a quarter of the size, and in the "room views" on their site you can see that they've arranged a number of them to create different effects. At $50/each for the CB2 ones, I decided to just go with the big rectangle from Crate & Barrel for $150.

K8 in Maine - Wow you noticed my Wii! =) Actually, I've never had to move the glass coffee table when we play. Instead, I push the grey armchair all the way back by the kitchen or front door, which gives us plenty of space to move around. I'm also super insistent on the wristbands so that I don't get into one of these situations:
http://geekologie.com/2006/12/07/wii_in_tv__2.jpg

Since the guests that come over are usually adults, I don't get too worried about the glass table, but it's was definitely stressful for me when I had small children over to play! That table is definitely not ideal for families with kids...

Lorie09 - Thanks! The paint I used in the bedroom is Behr Oat Cake in eggshell finish. For the living room it's Behr Manhattan Mist in eggshell finish. And for all of the doors, frames, and moldings I used Behr Ultra Pure White in satin finish.

I've always liked using eggshell finish on walls because it gives a much softer glow with just the slightest bit of light bouncing off the paint. For doors and trims I like either satin or semigloss finishes since doors tend to get dirty easily and fingerprints can be wiped off the glossier finishes without ruining the paint.

ridge_van_winkle - HA...yes I'll admit that the boiler in the bedroom closet was a bit of a turnoff for me (not to mention that I can no longer take hot showers that last longer than 20 minutes). But for now I have more than enough space for my clothes, and the living room closet is also very big inside, so that's where most of my stored seasonal clothing, coats, and shoes go.

As for the chicken pattern you see in the kitchen, it's actually a dish towel, but I bet they make an apron too. Glad you like it! A good friend gave that set to me as a housewarming gift but I'm not sure where it's from. I will post when I find out!

jenniemo - Glad you like the set up! The sofa and matching armchair (as well as the throw pillows and two-toned satin curtains) are from West Elm. They are part of the Square-Arm Collection. The color is "steel", but it looks as though they've unfortunately discontinued this collection... There are some armchairs and ottomans left at half the price I paid though!

hjp922 - Hi there! All of those lamps were from Home Goods, so unfortunately I have no idea who the manufacturers are. (Someone earlier commented that they were trying to find out as well, so hopefully someone else can answer!) The shades came with all of the lamps and they all went for about $79 each. I've seen the block crystal table lamp (in the living room) at Restoration Hardware but it comes with a slightly different lampshade, not to mention a price tag that's 3 times more than what I paid!
http://www.restorationhardware.com/rh/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod1233208&navCount=1

As for the vases, they're from West Elm circa Fall 2007. I'm glad you like them because I adored them when I saw them at first, but didn't buy them because I didn't even have the apartment settled yet. When I went back a week later they were gone! I searched high and low and finally found extra stock at a West Elm in NJ. Lesson learned: if you like something, don't wait!

rubyp3 - I was hesitant about the grey at first also and wanted to be on the safe side so I went with a lighter shade. I was a little scared at first because it's much darker when the paint is still wet! But after drying it turned out great, and depending on the lighting, there is a big range of shade to this color. (Appears much richer in the shadows.)

The A/C unit is under the right window curtains. The TV unit only covers about 1/8 of it or less, but only on the bottom part and not near the vents. When summer comes I will probably buy matching tieback hooks (from West Elm, to go with the rods) and pull back the curtains for both windows for symmetry and thereby exposing the A/C.

Hi Michelle.
Wow .
You certainly get the award for most favorable comments.
And deservedly so.
I'm really glad you saved your fireplace.
I like how you kept your kitchen and bathroom simple and monochromatic.
But doesn't anyone have some constructive criticism?
I do.
LOL!

I would think about doing that whole living room window wall in a couple more panels of that lovely fabric, wall-to-wall, with the 2 window portions opened as it is now.
Draping the mid-section would help diminish the TV's presence too, and give the wall more drama.
Maybe hang them higher too.
I know it's tight but pull that sofa away from the wall 6 inches.
It will make it look like you have more space and higher ceilings.
The same fireplace mantel chachkas are used again down in the hearth with the candles.
Why not just candles here?
That expensive bed looks a bit overwhelmed with all the stuff around it.

Yes, I'm a bit of a minimalist, but I believe in things being there if they need to be or if they decoratively enhance in some way.
I think with just a little editing and your gorgeous space might show even better!
Cheers.

paulmuscat - Haha thank you for your comments and I certainly do appreciate constructive criticism. Regarding your idea with the living room wall, it sounds interesting but because those drapes are dark in color and a thick silk fabric, I feel like going across the whole wall will give the room a very "heavy" feeling. Not to mention I think the oversized curtain rods I used to hold them up would look a little strange going across the entire wall. Lastly, the curtains were expensive ($200 each) which means I'd probably have to spend another $600 to do this...in my opinion, not worth it. Plus I've already got the wall-to-wall thing going on in the bedroom.

I think Jill's professional camera and wide angle lens makes the room look wider than it actually is...I really cannot afford to move the couch 6 inches!

As for the fireplace mantel, those 3 bulbs are actually vases, not candles, but I understand your point. Those actually were originally going to go on the wall where the TV is, I just haven't gotten around to finding the right thing to prop them up. I was going to have them staggered vertically along that small wall on top of short horizontal shelves.

I'm curious about your feeling with the bed though...I thought I already kept it pretty minimalist with just the artwork above and the lamps on either side. Did you mean that the plant and red clock were a little too much? If so, the plant was put there because I wanted to fill that space. And the clock is for functional reasons really....it's the loudest alarm I have and I have trouble waking up in the morning. =)

Thanks for taking the time to comment!

You really did an incredible job. I am absolutely amazed! Your bedroom closet situation is now probably the only negative about the apartment. However, I hope you might consider an earth-friendly solution. Buy a tankless hot water heater. You can buy some that are not much larger than the size of a boot box (somewhat larger than a shoebox). They are wall-mountable, they provide an endless supply of hot water, and they are both environmentally and economically efficient. You'll save your self a ton of space and money! You could even use the money you save on hot water to buy more clothes to fill all the extra space! Plus you won't run out of hot water! They are reasonably priced, and now widely available. Installation is easy too.
I hope you'll look into this option, it seems ideal for you.

Also, I was wondering about the manufacturer and model number of your iPod dock in the bedroom... Where can I get one?

thebear - Thanks so much for the suggestion, I will DEFINITELY look into that tankless hot water heater. I'm assuming I can find something like that at Home Depot? I'm always thinking of more ways to conserve energy since my electric bill seems to be getting out of hand. And I like where your head is at with using the money saved to buy more clothes to fill the space. =) As for the iPod dock, it is the Memorex iWake:

olya - Thanks for your kind comments! The candelebra is from Crate & Barrel:

THE LAMP HAS BEEN FOUND!

First, big thanks to Michelle (and her Aunt) for her awesome design inspiration. I was surfing this site this afternoon in my pj's (it's all of 1 degree fahrenheit here in Minneapolis), saw the lamp, b-lined to my nearest Homegoods store and lo and behold...the lamp was there! I plopped in my cart and while I was in the checkout line, 2 nice fashionista ladies approached me to ask about the lamp as well--this is one popular item. (Hello ladies!) Michelle, I also referred them to this site to see your home.

So, here is the info on the tag:

Maker: Dale Tiffany, Inc., La Mirada, CA
Name: Dale Home Crystal Lamp
Item #: GT701203

There is no phone number or web address listed.

First things first: So beautiful! Such an impressive job Michele. I've actually introduced two friends to this site my sending them this page!

About the lamps: I ran out to Home Goods, too! I was searching for the table lamp, which I love. Alas, the Secaucus store had neither. Do you recall in which store the table lamp was purchased? (this is bringing out my worst consume tendencies, but I must ask...)

Thanks, Cvillian, but that's *not* the lamp I covet. I'm hunting for the table lamp from the living room. Any info on the make or the Home Goods store still appreciated!

Hi guys! Wow I am so honored that people are still reading this post 2 weeks after it's been published! Thanks for all the accolades. =)

cvillian - THANKS for finding the make/model of that lamp! Very cool that you were able to locate it...although I must give the proper shout out to my MOM (thanks mom!) who picked up those table lamps (bedroom and living room) for me as gifts. The floor lamp that has sorta a chandelier thing going on underneath the shade is the one from my aunt - and I'm still curious on the make/model of that one too if anyone knows!

kushkush - I think she may have gone to the Home Goods in Parsippany or Union. She's a lot closer to Essex county so if you're willing to take a ride over, it may be worth checking out! Good luck.

You deserve the accolades, really. I think one of the reasons the kudos are still coming is that your home doesn't just look beautiful or well-designed; it looks easy to live in. And you should count yourself lucky that your mom and aunt can choose so wisely.
Thanks for the tip on HG, too.

Wow! This apartment is amazing! The before and after pictures give me hope for any decorating challenge. I love plants too, and the best low-light floor plant I have is my "corn plant" (Dracaena Fragans). It looks tropical, has really thick foliage and won't drop leaves like a ficus. it would fit great in that living room corner. Good luck and thanks for sharing!

Michelle,

Love everything you've done but will offer a candle-free suggestion for your fireplace: On another post, I had seen someone took "slices" of fire wood, about two inches thick, and they glued them to a form that fit in their fireplace so it looked like the fireplace was simply stuffed with stacked wood. It looked amazing and I think it would look great in your space!

Great job!

babz - Thanks for the tip on the plant, I was thinking of that as my next one as soon as this one kicks the bucket!

acitirol - Thanks! The rug is from Target and the other table you're talking about is actually a file cabinet from IKEA that I originally intended to put in the bedroom next to my desk, but didn't fit. It worked really well as an end table and saved me the trouble of finding an actual end table! I didn't like the handles it came with so I bought a different style of handles, which were also IKEA and standard size so it fits perfect. Warning...it took forever to assemble! Here are the links:

modtramp - Thanks for the design tip! Maybe I'll try it out when I remodel. =)

Michelle:

Love what you did to your place. I know just how it feels to have painted your own walls/doors/moldings. It's a great feeling.

I just moved into a studio and I hope you don't mind if I steal some of your design ideas, like the two different curtain colors. I like that lamp on the end table in the living room (as others mentioned), but I'm not sure if that's the one people found at Home Goods or not. Maybe you could clarify?

But what I most want to know is where did you buy your desk? I need a small, functional desk so badly and that one looks perfect. Please share. It looks like the length will be short enough for the 37 inch space I have for a desk. I also was wondering where you found the TV stand. I've looked high and low online to find pieces just like these, but to no avail. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Again, I really love your place and I'm jealous that you were able to buy in Manhattan!

Any news on the floor lamp? I have googled key words I thought might pull up something...'chandelier floor lamp, crystal floor lamp, chandelier drum shade, crystal chandelier floor lamp, etc...' nothing came up that was even similar. I think someone said it earlier that Candice Olson used a similar lamp in her show. I can't remember the show but it you go to www.divinedesign.tv it has all of the episodes plus a supplier list.

If anyone does know please post it or email me.
Thanks

JMBnewsgirl - Thanks for your kind words, it took a LOT of work and years of savings to be able to afford Manhattan, but it was all well worth it. =) To answer your questions, the table lamp in the living room is also from Home Goods (in fact, all the lamps are), but the "Dale Tiffany Lamp" that someone posted is actually the one in thet bedroom with the black/white shades. As for the desk, I found this at IKEA and it was super cheap (warning: this means cheap quality too, it's all particle board). I actually did not assemble that bottom panel where they put the computer CPU because I wanted to be able to fit a chair under the desk. The TV stand is also from IKEA and is very solid and sturdy (but also made of particle board). One of these days I'll switch to something nicer but these are just fine for now!

SpaHa robbi and SBurns - I'm really really sorry but I have absolutely no info on the chandelier floor lamp. This was a gift to me from my Aunt, and the only thing I know is that it was from Home Goods, but there are no tags or stickers on the lamp indicating the manufacturer/make of it. My only suggestion is to take a ride to Home Goods and scan the lamp section, but I know it's probabaly out of the way for a lot of people. Sorry!!! If anyone DOES find it though, please post it here!

Simply stunning!
While this isn't quite my style, I just have to say that it looks fantastic! I love that you choose to paint over the woodwork. (It looked so Home-Depot-ish, definitely not original.) Now the woodwork looks so sleek and classy, and also because of the painted look, it feels as though it has been there since the beginning. Very nice.

Great place!

I know you've probably listed the entire contents of your condo by now, but I'd really like to know where you got your couch! It's exactly what I've been looking for.

Thanks!

You have an really fantastic home! I'm impressed you can keep your kitchen so organized. I have a kitchen about the same size and the tiny amount of counterspace I have is almost always covered.

Hi all -

Dish rack is from IKEA, which I posted earlier:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/series/09945/

Sofa is from West Elm, which I also posted earlier and mentioned that it may no longer be available:
http://www.westelm.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?storeId=17001&langId=-1&catalogId=17002&viewSetCode=E&partNumber=WE-PRODf546&retainNav=true&parent_category_rn=&cmsrc=SCH&parentId=square arm

As for the kitchen cabinets...they were already here when I bought the place, so I have no idea where they're from! But thanks for the compliments!

Cheers everyone!
-Michelle
