House Tour Button06.jpgOfer is a professional photographer who works out of his home. Because he spends most of his day indoors, Ofer's goal, while apartment hunting, was to find something that would feel as close as possible to being outside. This apartment comes pretty close. It has huge windows with lots of light, and is on a high floor, far away from street bustle...

Inside Out Video.
Take a walk through the apartment.

On the day I was there, the windows were open wide and fresh air filled the room. "I'd like to be even quirkier, personally," said Ofer as I walked into his apartment. The space has plenty of furniture but feels spartan and clean because of the huge expanses of very white, white walls.

Instead of making more collages on paper, Ofer started to think of his small object collections as a type of 3-d collage. "I started collecting little objects when I moved in here," says Ofer. Each object has been chosen for its significance and its potential relationship to the other objects. There will never be too many objects, however as Ofer claims he finds it "hard to think when there's too much stuff everywhere...too much clutter."

Biggest Challenge Having a place to live and to work.

Proudest DIY Hanging up my collection of things on the wall.

there is just something about this place... i really like it.

some things borrowed
some things new
some things ikea
some things just randomly found and placed on things so you have to go right up really close to really see what exactly it is.

Who did he borrow all the great furniture from? Don't they miss their stuff?

posted by Jenny on 2006-11-29 14:14:48

Ofer - Your sofa and credenza are mine the second you decide they no longer suit you, deal?

Nice digs you have there.

Oh, what are the glossy squares on your entry walls?

It's been a while since I really enjoyed a house tour as much as this one on AT. Many thanks to Ofer for sharing his space with us. It is clean, crisp and calm. Great mix of new and old while being unified and interesting.

if possible to fall in love based on an apartment tour, i have...love it

Your place rocks! Just out of curiosity, if they post it now, does that pre-empt it from running in the next smallest/coolest, because you could totally win IMHO

my apt was featured on AT some time ago and i think my apt would really get along with Ofer's apt. both apts were labeled as 'quirky', they both have tone on tone painted wall art, and the both have 1 empty dark wood frame surrounding a quirky object. it's a match made in AT heaven..

unless the previous poster,'s', doesn't snatch him up first.

I really like the apartment...but I am suprised that someone who does not want "clutter" around has stuff on the top of every single flat surface!

A pile of pins on the credenza? Clutter!
A bunch of plastic toys on top of the hutch? Clutter!
Remotes? Clutter!
Hats and ties out on a tree instead of in a closet? Clutter!
Bike and guitar in the foyer? Clutter!

That being said, I love the art. Really well done collecting and display.

I would like to know where Ofer got the nice bookcase in the bedroom from? It's perfect in every shape, form and idea of the word 'bookcase' for me. its beautiful, and i'd like to know where i could obtain one for myself, or find a knock off of it.

posted by Johanna on 2006-11-29 15:10:52

Marie- exactly... the apartment is okay, overall, but it is far from clutter-free... it is really full of junk all over the place.

posted by mmm on 2006-11-29 15:12:57

I concur with Marie. It's a very nice place, but it is cluttered.
Sell some of that furniture and buy more art.

And it seems your apt. has some real potential as a personals ad.

do you wear the hats?

Very nice! Lovely installation with the four squares.

I enjoyed this one, thank you.

as Linda O'Keefe @ Met Home says "...there's a fine line between collections and clutter..."; this would be "collections"; it would be clutter if the pieces were scattered all over...

nice job!

i love the bookcase too--wondering where it came from, and also the bed linens are gorgeous--where are those from?

love the stripy wallpaper art in the dining room.

It's a really beautiful apartment.

But what difference does it make whether the contents are found on the street, borrowed, thrifted, etc. when the space itself is so far beyond the means of anyone on a budget? Yes, I know you can furnish an incredible, high-ceilinged, unaffordable space with free/cheap objects and have it look great. Why was the low cost of the objects so emphasized in the captions? In a space like that, it doesn't count as a budget decorating tip.

I'm just jealous, I admit it. I wish my apartment had that kind of space and light. And floors.

posted by Nina P on 2006-11-29 15:43:56

Your space is amazing. I am having apartment envy. It's so clean and full of light, perfect for viewing your amazing art collection.

I love your space. The floors are fabulous!

posted by kelly on 2006-11-29 16:22:35

After reading some of the comments, I don't agree that your place is too cluttered. I truly understand the dilema of loving beautiful quirky objects and yet clutter-free simplicity. It is a very delicate balance and one that I think you have accomplished brilliantly. I love the 3D collages. Perhaps if your place weren't so bright and airy, it would not work as well, but you've done a great job.

Display is not necessarily clutter. It becomes cluttered when buttons are all over the place or hats are all over the place. Grouped together these simple objects take on greater impact.

I adore ordinary objects as art and really love what you've done here. But, I think you are done. I don't think the apartment needs another thing, which is a tough place to be at. My place is in the situation too, so when something new comes in, something old goes out.

Great job. Thanks for sharing.

I just want to know where you got the credenza from? It not only looks very stylish, its very functional.

I think your place is amazing and you make good use of all your space.

posted by Aaron on 2006-11-29 18:31:17

I concur.... gorgeous space. I too love the credenza, amongst other things. You have a great knack for making the space feel fluid and clean and bright.

And clutter is personality and character... I have lots of that!
Great tour, Ofer and AT. Thanks, we all enjoy.

This makes me want to paint all of my walls white. It's simply awesome.

And clutter, in my opinion, is unintentional mess, while display is the deliberate arrangement of meaningful objects.

I would never in a million years call your place cluttered.

posted by Lil on 2006-11-29 23:29:35

I'm kind of surprised to see some folks call this place cluttered because it definitely isn't. But I guess it depends on what you value. If you don't value other people's pins and toys and other objects that obviously mean something to the homeowner, then they may look like clutter.

Really beautiful and inspring apt.

Is that an Eames Storage Unit behind the dining table? I haven't seen them in that configuration - extra wide with black top... any ideas where to find it?

"And clutter, in my opinion, is unintentional mess, while display is the deliberate arrangement of meaningful objects."

Exactly, and as far as I'm concerned the deliberate arrangement of meaningful objects is pretty much the ballgame.

Great space! I am also curious as to the maker of the crendenza. I've loved it since seeing it in 3rd Place Smallest Coolest winners Jane and Darko's entry and now again am reminded of what a neat piece it is.

posted by Jenifer on 2006-11-30 11:29:23

Simply one of the best ever shown here.

This is a serene, sane slice of modern and old in harmony. Unlike the typical Catalog-Direct Apartment, there is a blend of influences that add up to a personality, not just a set of purchases or pre-approved notions of what makes a space.

I really like how the spots of color are isolated. And the spareness puts my mind at ease.

posted by Richard on 2006-11-30 12:39:29

I see nothing but hard surfaces. Lack of window treatments or floor coverings in an apartment = noise. That loud empty-room sound of your footsteps echoing inside [I would hate live below people without carpeting], and the sounds coming out of your neighbors apartments. Textiles absorb sound. I'm always surprised by savvy AT readers/apartment dwellers who haven't made use of that fact.

Beautiful beautiful beautiful! The only thing dude needs is a sleek way to keep the bike out of the traffic area. Try the Delta "Leaonardo" hook (http://www.deltacycle.com/product.php?g=57) It's minimal as can be and you only need enough horizontal space to accommodate the handlebars. They cost about 15 bucks, hold a ton of weight, and almost disappear when there is no bike on them, unlike those crazy bar or pulley systems. [This is not a shill, I just really like 'em]

ofer, great place. it feels more spacious than the 600 sq ft suggest. possibly because of the white walls. also some of your objets d'art are really quirky and interesting.

btw, who is the woman in the thumbnail print. it looks like a hindi actress of yesteryears, waheeda rehman.

Nice. The space looks very clean while being really comfortable. I love the black hardwood floors. Black floors make me drool. And you have the 30" cinema display. I won't mention what that makes me do. :) Does the fililng cabinet really support the R2400 (printer) while printing?

I am also a photog. I work from home and understand how important it is to make an environment, of small size, conducive to productivity. I'm surprised you don't have more of your work on the walls.

Inside Out is always a "classic episode" on Mondays and an all-new episode on Wednesdays.

Jill, you may want to note that in fine print as part of the standard Inside Out heading -- someone asks just about every week.

Hey New York AT Enthusiasts,

Trying to de-clutter your tiny NY apartment? Want to have fun doing it? Let's get together and help each other!

I too have been struggling with some mild clutter issues for a while and I'm looking to partner up with some folks to get organized and stay organized. I'll come over to your place and help...you come over to my place and help me. The real kernel of this idea is that I (and assume others) just need a little physical moral support.

A little about me. I'm a 38 year old, artsy, sane, whimsical, professional tv editor by day, indie filmmaker by night. You can also check out my profile on myspace:

I don't get clutter from this place at all! Clutter to me always meant lots of things piled up or scattered around making other things inaccessible not, just having a certain amount of stuff.

Everything I see hear is in the right place, organized and you still have little personality bites through out the place so it doesn't feel too sterile.

As I write this, I look at my desk which is cluttered so, thanks for the inspiration Ofer!

I so wanted to love this place as I am a fan of clutter free and clean environments. However, I don't find this place inviting at all. It is a bit sterile with little warmth. I agree with Vicki - other textures and textiles may give this place more character. Even a single fiddle leaf fig tree would add excitement to the place. http://plantscapesny.com/sitebuilder/images/D2-263x436.jpg

This is fascinating. It reminds me of schoolhouses, offices, clinics, etc, but it is not clinical, not institutional. This space gives new meaning to "simplicity" in interiors and restores humanity to minimalism. Beautiful.

I'm still in awe! Usually minimalists say "everything must have a reason to be there," and they use this as an excuse to make their lives empty. Here, the "reason" becomes
"I find it beautiful," or "That's where I was standing when I put down my bag." I do wonder whether there is a way in winter to inject warmth, but somehow I believe it is possible.

The apartment feels cold. I'm getting chilly just looking at it. Perhaps a warmer white on the walls, or a large piece of interesting and colorful art, maybe even an area rug, would help warm things up a bit.
