One can't help but notice an inordinate amount of outdoor furniture in Scott's patio. He can comfortably seat at least a dozen people. Scott loves to host and can do so at a moment's notice. He has service for dozens, glassware for masses, and enough holiday decorations to put the average urban dweller to shame.

How is all this possible, you may ask? Well, Scott loves New York, but in order to create a sustainable lifestyle for himself he decided to move beyond it. He lives in Edgewater, New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from West 51st Street. What he loves most about his very modest neighborhood is that the New York City skyline is always visible. He appreciates the quiet streets but told me he'd become unsettled and feel too isolated if the city wasn't palpably close. Scott also likes that Edgewater reminds him of where he grew up in Pittsburgh. "I don't think there's any place I'd rather live. If I moved, it would be to another place in Edgewater."
In exchange for a NYC zipcode, Scott has a basement, a laundry chute, and a small pond in his patio. His neighbor named their immediate community "Camp Undercliff." Scott has a plaque hanging from the guest bedroom door that says, "The W at Camp Undercliff."
Scott moved in when he was a grad student so he didn't start renovating and decorating until he had lived in his house for three years. He's still working at it &mdash still collecting, still entertaining, and still enjoying the suburban escape every evening. "I don't think it will ever be finished," admits Scott.
AT Survey
Style: clean traditional/content appropriate
Inspiration: everything was selected based on personal taste and what was appropriate for the house.
Favorite Element:: : Family room and master bedroom are the two most dynamic spaces with the house with sloped ceilings adding the to the rustic feel and sense of being in a small intimate house.
Biggest Challenge: 1) After doing new woodworking and bookshelves in the master bedroom getting the two three-way light switches property rewired was much harder than I could ever imagine. I would absolutely hire an electrician even for simple things after that experience. 2) Finding furniture that was appropriately scaled and styled for the house. Many items were designed for extremely large homes and would have completely overwhelmed the rooms.
What Friends Say: I think most people are so surprised that something like this in a wooded area exists right next to the city. It’s an amazing retreat and feels like a weekend country house every day.
Biggest Embarrassment: When people stay it looks like a Pottery Barn catalogue. The quality of the furniture is much higher and there is actually not a single piece of Pottery Barn furniture in the house.
Proudest DIY: master bedroom wood work, and patio
Biggest Indulgence: I had a couple of pieces custom made by a small furniture maker in Bucks County.
Best Advice:: Don’t rush to get the entire home done in a short period of time. One’s needs change as they learn how the home works. Also, making the purchases over a longer period of time gives the house a much more interesting and layered appeal (without feeling like you just purchased an entire Pottery Barn stage).

Love the choice of kettle on the stove!

What a wonderful--and different--post. This is a real home--not done to impress but just a very personal glimpse into someone's life. It would almost feel wrong to criticize anything, because it's just a nice home that is clearly evolving as the owner decides what he wants to do with different rooms.
I love the fact that he has kept the old appliances. Scott, you should submit your kitchen pics to retrorenovation.com.

Really nice a cozy home and probably refreshing for friends to visit that live in Manhattan. Whoever said your place looks like a Pottery Barn Catalog really met that as a compliment and just not knowing any better.

1. LOVE the old kitchen appliances. used to have similar ones in one of the many apts i lived in and they were my favorite part of the apt (they actually worked, otherwise i would not have liked them so much)
2. would like to see photo of the outside as the rooms seem to have such interesting angles.

I would like to know where you purchased the white ceramic utensil holders.

I loved this tour and Scott reminds me of Dr Archie in ER. I'm a fan of NJ too.

I love how you've organized your household! I wish we had so much space here in San Francisco! The bookcase perched above the MB stairwell makes me nervous, but that's just my regional-centric skittishness.

I like the way you have used the quilts, they are traditional without looking too fussy.

The wood ceilings and room angles really do give your house the feel of a country retreat. You have a very nice balance between comfort and style. It must be a lovely place to come home to!

Wow, where did you get that pillow on the guest bed? The one with the line drawing of the house. I love it!

It's quite the beautiful space. I'd entertain often if it were my home, as well!

I absolutely love this house. The kitchen is my favorite as well. And as a NJ native, I'm glad to see this post.
I also have the same Pottery Barn NYC highlights poster. I love how Scott put it against a beige wall. It really makes it pop.

Hi,
I will try to answer some of the questions posted about my home.
White Utensil Holders; came from Target but during one of those periods when they have lots of imports (normally after the holidays and before the gardening shop opens). I love containers which represent what goes in them. I haven't seen them since though.
Small House Pillow in Guest Bedroom; It just say "K" on the label and I believe its K Designs or something like that. It was purchased at the National Building Museum in Washington DC. They have a website and a helpful staff who might be able to assist you in locating it.
Edgewater Home Tour; for those interested in seeing more unique homes in Edgewater I strongly recommend the house tour which is in the summer. My home has been on in the past and it tends to be older homes in the community. Bergen County has a number of these during the summer an can be a fun day trip from the city without much driving.
Lastly, for those who are interested I will be launching a website in late April or May of other spaces I have designed (which are much more modern). If you like send me your email address and I will add you to the launch release.
I'm so glad so many of you enjoyed the tour!

Love the quilt. Bet that's no surprise, huh! The kitchen is very cool too.

You have a great home with very good attention to detail and good taste. It's very approachable and looks like a fun place to live. Part of the appeal is that it is a real home...not 'designer' or staged. I love the sleeping loft for overnight guests...can I come visit?? ;D wink...wink... Thanks for sharing!

Scott, when is that house tour in Edgewater? I also live in NJ and would love to see it.

Follow-up on sources/questions:
Tea Kettle is Michael Graves by Alessi a classic that you can now get 20% off with your handy bed bath and beyond coupon!
Bookshelf going up to the master bedroom was built in so in the event of an earthquake you would only have to worry about books, not the whole cabinet, falling on you!
Chrysler Building Print; I had a very hard time locating this, it is one of two prints done by Mary Calkins (the other is the Empire State Building. Originally I saw it at Marshall Fields in Chicago. I wanted both the prints but could only find the Chrysler (which is the better of the two actually). None of Calkins other work is like this at all. Its a nice size too 37" x 37"...if anyone finds it I'd like another because it makes a nice gift.
Edgewater Home Tour is put on by the Independent Coalition for a Better Edgewater. Right now its not on the calendar but if I find anything out I will share it with apt therapy.

Scott, I enjoyed your tour so much. Really love the bed suspended from the ceiling and the old oven. Also the pillow with the house on it and the quilts. I laughed when I saw your storage of potpourri - your forethought and organization are striking. Thanks for sharing your wonderful home.

sigh.. if only I was that organized. Your home looks incredibly welcoming, comfortable, well loved and lived in. I hope can see it in person someday.. and sleep up in that loft! Oh, that would have been my favorite spot in the whole house as a child.

I am glad to see a house from New Jersey. I am surprised that more aren't showcased here. I hope there will be more in the future (and also more homes from Philadelphia).
This is a nice, well-organized house. In my opinion, it really does have a very strong Pottery Barn vibe and if you enjoy that kind of design, then this is an exemplary example of it.

For the source of the pillow on the bed, the designer is Shelly Klein, and her studio is called K Studio. She does great work. Check out her web site: http://www.kstudiohome.com/
Scott, I love that you've justified the existence of The Clapper! Is it possible to use it without the song going through your head "clap on (clap clap) clap off (clap clap)." I'm not sure I could!
P.S. AT it's "laundry chute" not "shoot" bang bang.

I luv it. Warm and lovely. The best I've seen on here, not so trendy.

I dream of your organization, but agree that it takes time, you don't have to finish a room right away because you have to grow with the room and really take time to figure out how to arrange it so that it works for you. Love the organization. The bathroom is not my style but looks definitely luxurious.

Thanks for the glimpse of your beautiful home. I've always been curious about those cliff-side towns north of Hoboken, and thought what a convenient commute you guys have. From what I've seen in Martha Stewart Living, your basement storage rivals anything she has in her own homes!

Anastasia, I am with you, but in general, the house is great. If it were ours, it would not be such a problem to throw the weeds on the compost, donate the quilts to a dog shelter and enjoy the rest.
view bromelia's profile
Donate Denyse Schmidt quilts to a dog shelter? Oh, HA. HAHAHAHA. Really! Your quilts are fabulous, fabulous.
Such a stunning home. I gonna stalk these photos of your amazing party prep and storage spaces for when I need a kick in the organizational pants. Or a laugh... *clap*clap**bling*

The "doll" looks like a big penis. There's nothing wrong with that. It just does. I think the tour could have been enhanced if there were more pictures of Scott.

Beautiful home. Where did you find that great subway poster in photo #21?
view defjam's profile
Exemplary in many ways, though I think the colors could be a little more imaginative in places.
How great that the owner entertains a lot and shares his place.
view Georgina's profile
Sorry to say that I don't like the commercial St. Patrick's Day banner on the patio. At least, here, it appears to be visible only from the private property and maybe it was a party decoration. I think these holiday flags are tacky and I often wish people wouldn't inflict something so large and often garishly colored on their neighbors!
