apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Inside Out: Abby's Southwest Outpost

Inside Out: A showcase for those who transform their residences into homes via innovative intervention
abby feldman14.JPG

Name: Abby
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Size: 400 sqft, 1-bdrm rental
Years Lived In: 1.5 years

Abby's apartment slopes, at times precipitously, but it is all hers, with a great view of the Brooklyn Port and her own garden in the sky.

She's moved around a lot--Santa Fe, Philadelphia, New Orleans--but what seems to have stuck is her love of Mexican folk art and the desert aesthetic. The other big impact on her immediate surroundings is that Abby, a landscape architect, is partial to "all things green."

Do you have an idea for a house tour? Let me know! jill@apartmenttherapy.com

Abby has accumulated many things over the years as well and is wary of hiding too many of them away. She enjoys being triggered by memories or potential projects rather than remaining blissfully ignorant of her past with everything packed away behind closed doors or even worse, in storage.

Her decor is often funny as well as colorful and from diverse sources. It looks like Abby's apartment will soon burst at its seams. Abby, aware of this, is already looking for the next destination.

AT Survey:

Style: Lolita
Inspiration: Mexican Day of the Dead shrines
Favorite Element: All things that are growing, but especially my cactus
Biggest Challenge: Sensory overload, but if I can’t see it, I might forget I have it.
What Friends Say: It’s cozy, colorful, cute, and so “Abby”
Biggest Embarrassment: Stinky kitty litter box in the living room.
Proudest DIY: Converted wooden printer type drawers into eraser collection display cases.
Biggest Indulgence: The iMac, which saves me about a whole square foot of space.
Best Advice: “Don’t cry over anything that can’t cry over you.” A quote from my Great Grandma Pearl.

Oh my! If it weren't for the shot of the view, I'd have assumed this was in Tucson.

Love the boyfriend (yum!).

Well you can take the girl out of Santa Fe but you obviously can't seem to get Santa Fe out of the girl... Abby, you are as chic and original as ever - of course any home you had would be smashing. Great to stumble into you on AT! Mwah!

Some very cool stuff. And I usually crine when I see criticism on here, so I'm expecting dissent when I say: I'm more than a little offended by the "Baños de Gays" "art" piece...not even funny...

ooh, and misspelling really makes me cringe! (not crine)

I like the cozy feel of your space. I also love the view of the piers from your balcony. I think we might be neighbors, since I have the same view.

One Eyed Daruma, the Banos de Gays "art piece" is a Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead shrine. (I know they're called something specific, help me out here, southwesterners.) These little wooden folk shrines show skeletons living in scenes from daily life, and they usually have a sense of humor. I've seen them showing skeleton wives finding their skeleton husbands in bed with skeleton mistresses, skeleton moms spanking skeleton kids, skeleton politicians, etc. What's so offensive about a gay bathhouse?

I really enjoy looking at all of the different colors. It looks like you took these photos on a cold and dreary day. By design, your apartment must seem sunny all the time. It's a great juxtaposition. I think colors are so important in Latin (Mexican) culture because of how they affect the spirit. More simply, just because they can make people happy.

You have some really interesting pieces of art as well.

I'd love to see your patio when the weather breaks and you greenify it.

I have a few friends who would love to have that "Gay Bath House" piece. Sometimes it's the simplest, least expensive things that can really become a conversation piece.

You're place is so cute. Generally I can't handle alot of knicknacks and all that but you've done it really well here. I want that little lamb planter on your deck....

And you're boyfriend is a bit of a hottie.

Lucky girl.

Lovely colors..just looking at your place helped to banish the weather blah I feel.

One thing, can you get your bed off the floor, seems a bit dormroom for such a sophisticate!!

I'll buy your BANOS DE GAYS. How much do you want for it?
If you don't want to sell it -- where can I buy one?

I like the apt in general, but I fell in love with details in bathroom shelf... :-))

I think your apt tells so much about the personality of its owner, it is so colorful and unique.. I love it.

Although my style is somewhat different, I'm fascinated by this artwork and all the cheery colors. What a great collection- erasers! Never knew anyone who had that. Have you ever seen Kathy Murillo's work? Check out http://craftychica.com/shop/ or http://patrickandkathymurillo.stores.yahoo.net/diadelosmuer.html for her Dia de los Muertos series.

I am really inspired by this home. It has such a to keep true to your own unique style. You're not trapped by trying to adhere to a particular "look" yet the place looks sweetly cohesive to me.

Yes, very lovely space! And although your style is differnent than what I have going on in my place, I think I'd feel right at home in your apartment. Very funky, inviting place you've created! Thanks for sharing!

Love the apartment. I'm a big fan of developing a look over time instead of just buying a matching set of things.

MrGreen thinks that this apartment is exactly what he would expect to see if were invited to a party by one of the young ladies in the Creative Department at work, but it is not at all cliched and is still unpredictable. It is great to see a little personality in an apartment on A.T., a dwelling full of meaningful objects not picked out one Saturday at DWR or Ikea and plopped into rooms painted in the latest colors from the West Elm catalogue.

Delightful.

My guess is that this is the closest you will ever get to anything resembling a party invitation by one of the young ladies in the Creative Department, so savor every image.

And that whole "looks like it came from the West Elm catalog" thing is soooooooooo tired.

Hi
Good work.
Nice collections too. Fun!
I know it's crowded, but consider moving the bed away from the wall another 6 inches.
It will really change things and won't look stuffed against it.
