Inside Out: A showcase for those who transform their residences into homes
via innovative intervention
Name: Andrea
Location: West Village
Size: 600 sqft 2-bdrm rental
Word of mouth is the only way to get an apartment in this building. It's rent-stabilized and a wonderful find for Andrea.
The apartment has most of its original old-world charm, including molding, and lots of space.
Do you have an idea for a house tour? Let me know! jill@apartmenttherapy.com

Andrea has inherited a lot of great family heirlooms, including lamps, dressers, and even a few 1940's dresses worn by her grandma. She has tried to integrate each piece into her slightly modern leaning style, creating a great eclectic and vibrant feel for the apartment.
As much as Andrea has enjoyed moving in and experimenting with her new space, she is very open to new ideas and welcomes comments from our esteemed and knowledgeable peanut gallery.
My Style: urban classic meets treasures from the last century
Inspiration: family heirlooms (lingerie dresser, upholstered chairs, alarm clock, 30s lamps and graphics), modern classics and urban hip (which I’m missing at the moment but would love to find some inspiration for the walls)
Favorite Element: The apartment itself – the light, the quiet and the turn of the century details (French doors, moldings, and glass transoms).
Biggest Challenge: Finding the “perfect” affordable art, wall decoration and paint colors, and making decisions so I can move forward with pieces I need (new rug & coffee table in the living room, window treatments, dressers and rug in the “dressing room,” storage for the office/guest room and under the TV, etc.).
Biggest Embarrassment: the clutter beneath the television and the “junk room” which needs work to make it usable and presentable as a “dressing room.”
What Friends Say: : feel instantly comfortable and at home
Best advice: Be inspired with pieces from your past and integrate them with modern classics that anchor the space.
Proudest DIY:a small thing: rewiring all the old lamps
Biggest Indulgence my new sofa
Dream source: high end mid century stores along 25th street and nearby.
Resources:
Sofa – Room and Board André sofa with Valenti Graphite fabric (special order)
Bed – DWR Alu (renamed “Min”)
Rug and coffee table in living room – old Crate and Barrel
Bookshelves – The Container Store
Shades in bedroom – Home Depot
Possible paint colors in dressing room:
Benjamin Moore Sesame (left)
Benjamin Moore Sweet Daphne
Benjamin Moore Pear Green (right)
Possible paint in office/guest room
Benjamin Moore Pale Oak

Now, please move and give the rent stabilized 2 bedroom to a FAMILY that actually needs the extra space. Hell, swap spaces with the Webmaster!
And Michael, rent control/stabilized isn't all evil, but there's something not right about Andrea's situation--assumingly a single, childless, and able-bodied person who can afford a market rate apartment (no one who can't shops at DWR).
I agree - this is exactly what I come to AT for - lovely apartment
I'd have to do something with the see-through doors into the bedroom - no point having them if people can see through them!
Great kitchen table and chairs and a lovely apartment!!
Beautiful space! Andrea, would you be willing to send me your landlord's name and phone number?
I have the same pink marble table!
Your place is lovely.
You had me at "guest bedroom".
I predict a diatribe on the evils of the NYC rent laws. Brace yourselves everyone!
Little bone to pick, but . . . (and this is NOT intended to start any discourse on rent regulations) -- this building is undoubtedly rent STABILIZED. The last rent-controlled leases were issued in 1971. Buildings can have both types of tenants, of course.
Wow. What a great find and great potential!
Love that you have inherited items from your Grandma in your space. Unfortunately, my family emigrated here and didn't have much they could take.
You're so lucky!
the white bookshelf in the bedroom...can someone tell me where that is from? that is exactly what i need for my entry way. i like how light weight it feels
really lovely and inspirational - i have very similar moldings! might i enquire as to your bedroom wall color?
It's absolutely charming. It made ma all fuzzy and warm inside.
this just makes me sad about the $2000+ i pay for a studio in soho. thanks for nothing, apartment therapy. and andrea.
what a glorious apartment - and spacious as can be for the west village. ahh, the jealousy is boiling! BOILING! goodness. i wish i could turn back time -- the moment i got out of the womb i would have robbed a bank and went shopping in this city!
Devon - bookcase looks like the stackable folding kind from The Container Store. See link in my initials.
The French doors are nice and if you need a paper clip look no further than the hatbox.
Hi Andrea.
I really love your space, especially your bedroom. You apartment reminds me of my last apartment--a lovely Victorian in southern AL.
I just love the Lucite handles on your dresser. And I think I like the middle of the three green shades for your paint choice. It seems to me you want something fairly vibrant and alive, and I think #2 will do the trick for you without being too much.
Again, lovely space. I'm excited for you to move forward with some of your design decisions. I can see your place being completely awesome as you continue to fill it.
Wow! I'm really jealous! Your space feels so bright and open, nicely done.
I like the dresser you've had since childhood.
Your place seems very sparse -- bordering on empty. I kind of like that. To me it has a Russian feel to it.
Tony G.
What a lovely space. very serene and comforting. thanks for sharing.
Hi Andrea,
One quick question...it looks like there's a big lamp sitting on your bathroom's window sill, is that right? If so, why do you point it out the window? Just curious...
Leyre
one of my favorite house tours! i love the thoughtful details. and not too overly decorated.
a beautiful space!
Hi all,
Thanks so much for all your nice comments! Mid-c Frank was indeed correct, the apartment is stabilized, not rent controlled. And the paint in the entire apartment is just the landlord's BM Atrium white....(which is why I'm dying to add some color!)
i'm amazed at how nice everyone is playing.
yay!
Andrea - beautiful place. you've managed to put a lot of stuff in here, and collectibles, without it looking cluttered or messy. AND you've done ok with that standard mdf kitchen too.
i didn't even know there was such a thing as 2bdrm rentals in NYC ;-)
WOW. I am blown away. I dream of moving to NYC over the next few years- and this is the sort of place I dream of moving into.
Congrats on the place- you've done an amazing job- but you obviously had a great foundation to start with. Very cool place!
Very lovely place.
Rent stablized places still exist, especially in downtwon Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights.
I found mine via eavesdropping on a private conversation. It pays to be nosey.
I never thought that a dresser could be described as "sculptural," but you've proved me wrong.
It looks great! I actually have an identical table to yours in the kitchen--that I bought as a baby's changing table last week!
I like what you have on the walls, especially the maps over the bed and the "Craftsman" issues.
Love the desk chair in the guestroom/office -- source?? Thanks. Great apt. and love how you have used your family's pieces.
Jacquelyn -
Thanks!

by way of craigslist...
This is one of my favorite home tours, those arch details are wonderful. I am bookmarking this home tour, it's GRAND.
Can I ask, do you own or rent?
Holly
Did anyone else see the hat on the bed in the guest bedroom and think of the film Drugstore Cowboy?
Holly: Can you READ? Or can you only write senseless questions before taking the time to read? It CLEARLY says RENTAL in the description, more than once.
Your guest room looks lonely. When can I come over?
This is what I come to Apartment Therapy for. Seriously.
Wow, so many of those things look familiar, like I've seen them at someone else's house... but they couldn't possibly be the same ones. Fresh air? Times Square? You city folk... what fun!!
thank god for grandparents with fabulous taste. i would be so lost without mine.
great apartment. i especially love the constellation maps above the bed; perfect bedroom art that doesn't hit you over the head with the dream motif.
Would the guest bedroom accommodate a 6'1" tall 46-year-old male from Harvard?
WHO DO I HAVE TO SLEEP WITH TO GET A 2-BEDROOM RENTAL? WOULD THEY PREFER MY BF INSTEAD? A GROUP? THOSE FRENCH DOORS!
NEEDLESS TO SAY, I AM JEALOUS, JEALOUS, JEALOUS... I HAVE A RC APARTMENT IN THE EV, BUT THE ONLY MOLDING IS ON THE BATHROOM CEILING.
Andrea, I've got a lovely old end table that my fall victim to white paint; I blame you and your beautiful white table you have in the kitchen (it looks like a sculpture with those mixing bowls). The gilt mirror and lucite lamp on your dresser look perfect together. What a wonderful home;

How much do you pay a month?

That is larger than 600 square feet. It looks more like 900 to me.

Beautiful place.
I love this style building.
VioletsRose - if one lives alone, who cares if the bedroom doors are see-thru?
I had similar doors to my bedroom in a past apartment. Never covered 'em. Heck, I rarely even closed them.

The apartment itself is beautiful, but for me it's missing something. I think it might be a combination of things. First off, bring in some life! Plans or something organic would really help to warm the space. Secondly, your scale of accessories really bothers me. You have some BEAUTIFUL pieces, but your lamps are all way too small. The artwork you have (though beautiful) doesn't fit the space. There are also areas that are screaming for work! I'd hate to see you clutter the space and take away from the natural beauty of the apartment (because it is beautiful!) but it just seems to me like a lot of your accessories are just too small in scale. Just my thought.

Rob, the problem with the artwork is not the scale, it's the placement, up near the ceiling. Almost everything on the walls needs to come down lower. That patterned thing over the television looks like it's trying to escape.

Sorry, Rob, MrGreen's comment was describing the movie-girl's apartment, not this necrothread one.

Beautiful apartment, the wood floors, bathroom tiles, french doors and moldings are right up my alley. Love the kitchen table and pyrex collection.

What a great place. I had the pleasure of living in a mostly vintage mid to late 20's era studio for 6 years, true, things like counters and such got replaced but still had it's original light fixtures, kitchen and bathroom details/cabinets.
The white table with the mixing bowls on it reminds me of what I did in the kitchen. I had one of those slide together particle board shelves between the fridge and outside wall and on it I had the coffee pot, mixing bowls (2 sets, one vintage like yours), cookbooks and I forget what all else and a small 13" mid 80's era color TV for watching the news. Looked cool and homey too.
It's details like that, that I find makes a place look homey and lived in, but not messy or necessarily cluttered and you show good use of that idea in your space.
Love the details, furnishing mixes and love, love, love those lucite handles, simply outrageously fabulous on that dark lingere chest. I like how you mix antiques and other traditional elements with more mid century modern/contemporary pieces. If done well, it all goes great together.

Note to Editor:
Just don't MENTION rent stabilization.

i think asking someone how much they pay for rent is kinda rude. no?
view kiwi's profile
kiwi, it is indeed rude, but people in New York talk are willing to ask and answer such questions.

Hi all,
Thanks again for your comments. some responses:
B: it's possible it's a little bigger than 600 - but measuring wall to wall of each room it's not close to 900. It was a wide angle lens!
Rob: Thanks for your comments. True - but I was using some family pieces and that always makes things hard to replace.
Joeq: Nope, not Christopher, but close!

It's not rude to ask about rent numbers in NYC: Here real estate is a sport. I'd love to know the rent too.
But I also wish that, when you show these fabulous pictures, you also include a drawing of the apartment layout with the real sizes of the rooms.
I have an alcove studio that is 600sf, and that apartment looks so much bigger than mine. Could it be the camera playing tricks?
