apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Inside Out: Ken's Curated California Collection

Inside Out: A showcase for those who transform their residences into homes via innovative intervention
ken12.JPG

Name: Ken
Location: Haight Ashbury, San Francisco, California
Size: 2-3 bdrm, 1550 square feet TIC
Years lived in: 5 years

Although Ken grew up in LA, a veritable mid-century mecca, he remained relatively oblivious to all things design until he moved to New York in the early 90's.

Hypnotized by the 6th Avenue flea market, he started to collect art deco artifacts from the 1930's and 1940's.

ken20.JPG

Over time, and upon returning to California, Ken's taste migrated towards mid-century design. Ken's apartment is rather spacious and his drive to amass 50-60 year old furniture is persistent, methodical, and rationed. So, each piece is bought to be site specific and gets the attention it deserves. And Ken's home remains a work in progress.

Craigslist and Ebay are fertile ground.

AT Survey:

Style: Midcentury modern, with a little functionalist and a soupcon of 1940s Americana

Inspiration: I cannot think of an inspiration. I just wanted to create a place that felt comfortable to live in and allowed me to show off the cool furniture and objects that I have.

Favorite Element: My living room custom built-in cabinets with special cubby holes for my vintage fan collection.

Biggest Challenge: Figuring out how to use all 6 rooms well when my inclination is to live completely in one room (the den/office)

What Friends Say: "Where did you get all this furniture?"

Biggest Embarrassment: the bathroom

Proudest DIY: Figuring out the color scheme for the apartment (after promising the painter that there would only be 2-3 colors used)

Biggest Indulgence: Living alone in a 6-room apartment

Best Advice: 1) Its not necessary to spend a lot of money, and buy name pieces of furniture and art to impress people. 2) Trust the advice of a really good craftsperson if you happen to have one in your house. The green and white tile pattern in the kitchen only happened because of the tilesetters suggestion (I was going to have a green counter and white floor.) And he didnt even charge me extra for all the custom cutting.

Dream Source: The 6th Avenue (Manhattan) flea markets back in the good old days.

I normally hate Art Deco/Midcentury Modern/1940s Americana/etc. but this is very nicely done. The kitchen especially made me smile.

Ken--

What a lovely home!

Where did you get your dining table? I've been looking for one just like it.

Thanks!

Way too bare. Where are the accessories and layers that make it look like somebody actually lives there?

My gosh. Would I ever love to move in. What a beautiful space you've created.

I love how artfully you have displayed your collections. Love the collection of fans. Love the collection of clocks. I also love how you have let some beautiful pieces of furniture (like your credenza) breathe. This piece is beautiful enough that it doesn't need stuff piled all over it. Same for your mantel. It is very artful the way you have allowed neither furniture nor objects to overpower each other.

The built-ins are beautiful as are your sofas. This must be a wonderful place of calm to return to at the end of the day.

Thanks for sharing.

I like your apartment but all of your artwork looks like it's trying to escape by climbing up the wall.

Wonderful... I really like how he displays his beautiful collections. I wonder if in 50 years from now people will be collecting our ugly appliances [that we currently try so hard to hide (e.g., TV sets, computers, etc.)].

I love the clean lines and vintage feel. What a neat way to display his fans and clocks! It feels so classic and calm. I love the blue-green color in his office.

I can see why Ken spends so much time in that back room: it's truly the "warmest" room in the house.

I really like how Ken hasn't allowed the fabulous architecture to determine his "style." Somehow, it's allowed to exist in it's own right and though quite different from MCM there's no fighting. It's great to see an interior style and its architecture getting along so beautifully.

Love those built-ins.

Stunning and meticulous. You should be very proud. And the photos are great - you seem to have a decent camera with a wide enough lens, the only thing I'd suggest is that you try holding it level so the verticals line up with the side frame, and you will get a more professional looking shot. Not that you need professional looking shots! but in case you wanted to send to a magazine - like Echoes if it's still around.
Speaking of which, yes, that 6th Ave flea market is sorely missed!

nice space but the objects (clocks, fans, etc.) are overinformed by the pottery barn catalog.

you appear to have a great cleaning-service, however.

Hi Ken,
I am wondering what you know about the green chair in your living room. I recently picked up two that are identical, though I am sure they are Danish- I do not know the designer. Any idea?

Some of your pieces are absolutely lovely. I particularly like your glass and wood coffee table in the living room. Do you have any information on who made it or where it comes from?

thanks!

This is fantastic! (And to those who nay-say other's taste, or claim there's no personality, remember that not every thought needs to be submitted to the AT crowd.)

Too much MCM. There are nice things here, but I'd like to see some pieces from other eras mixed in.

I just bought a flat (also in the Haight) with this exact same layout/architecture that I'm about to furnish, and I was worried that MCM might clash too much, but it's fascinating to see how you've made it work, and I wasn't even thinking of having that many pieces from that era. Bravo! I'm feeling a bit more liberated in how to design it, now.

"remember that not every thought needs to be submitted to the AT crowd"

but everyones opinion is as valid as everyone elses so they are as entitled to post theirs as you are to post yours

Great apartment but I find it a little cold and unfriendly - could be the lack of curtains - I find rooms without them look like no-one lives there - the word that came to mind when viewing this apartment was lonely - typifies a single mans apartment

(Time to refill those kitchen light blubs!)

I submitted a comment, but it never posted. Weird.

I think this apartment is charming. Love the colors. I also think that spare does not equal not having personality--and your flea market finds are quite eclectic.

I don't find it lonely or unfriendly at all--quite the opposite.

Does anyone know who made his side table? our coffee table (from antique store) has the same kind of curve and wood insert on the side.

i guess i should try looking around our table first to see if i can find a manufacturers stamp :)

The actual bones of the space look fantastic and it absolutely screams for color. Some of the spaces (namely the diningroom) look a little bare, but overall the space is great. I would absolutely die for your den/office space.

where is the bedroom?

I love the care and thought you've put into your place. I wish I had that kind of patience and forethought! I agree though with some other voices on here... the art is all too hung a bit too high.

Where did you get the equipment to hang the art from the picture molding? I've been planning to do this in my own apartment, but have been rather daunted by the task of figuring out how to do it and where to get the right hooks and wiring. You say it's very easy, so any tips would be much appreciated.
Lovely place, by the way--wish I could be so disciplined in my decor!

Wow! Your furniture and arrangements are gorgeous. The blinds on the windows are a good idea - they are in keeping with the age of most of your furniture and allow you to control the light - no curtains necessary.

Licnell,

I'm betting that table is vintage as I just inherited the exact one (but with a different colored fabric on the seat) from my grandmother. I'm pretty sure it's forty years old, though I can't think manufacturers name at the moment.
