Inside Out: A showcase for those who transform their residences into homes
via innovative intervention
Name: Nick and Rena
Location: Venice
Size: 1500 sqft, 2 bdrm duplex
Rena and Nick were fortunate enough to have obligations in Venice this summer. So, they rented an apartment and suffered through a month in paradise.
Living in a 300 year old home is not really big news in Italy, but it is still awe-inspiring, and on a short-term stay, does not get old any time soon.

Food and history are very important to Rena and Nick so Venice suited them just fine. The apartment is a place that is often rented out to academics passing through, so it has a feeling of home even though it isn't. The strangest find, however, was a kitchen drawer filled with 17 nutcrackers!
Years lived in: 1 month
Favorite element: the roof deck outfitted with dining table
Biggest Challenge: the five flights up
Those stairs are amazing, as are most of the floors. The kitchen sink & countertop are unassuming, sweet, and clean. Love the romance of all those craZy exposed ceiling beams and HUGE vs tiny windows. But...was that a bidet?

Ditto on the stairs and the floors. I am now hopeful that I can find a way to do a poured terrazzo above ground level!

Dude, where's my roof deck like that?

Love the terrazo and tile and wide plank floors. I must be amazing to live in a house with so much history.

The roof deck is definitely the key element.
cardboard: bidets are standard issue in Italian homes. It's not considered a luxury.

Just want to make sure they also have a potty though. I am concerned...and I shouldn't be. Ha.
I used to know a brother/sister named Nick & Rena. Weird.

I assumed the Venice in question was in California, duh! This is THE Venice... gorgeous! Love the mahogany windows, the marriage of old and new, the sense of colour and texture... I could go on...
