Not only did they design the renovated kitchen space, but Sarah and Jim also built many of the pieces in their home. They personally poured the concrete for the kitchen counter, and Jim built the baby changing station and the low lying toy storage in the living room.

Jim and Sarah have perfected the art of mixing the mass manufactured cheap with the high-end designer. Together, they have a home that feels lived in and looks crisp and well thought out.

AT Survey:

Style: Casual Urban
Inspiration: Travel, friends, books, web, and the challenge of decorating with a 1yr old in mind
Favorite Element:: How spacious the apartment feels, the light in the morning and couple favorite pieces of furniture.
Most Talked About Element: The kitchen wall
Biggest Embarrassment: The bathroom, we haven’t done anything with it yet. And corners here & there; it’s defiantly not a decorator’s apartment. We’re always fixing, streamlining and improving.
Proudest DIY: : Our kitchen, making the concrete counter top in particular.
Best Advice: Buy the best quality you can afford and those pieces will last longer than any temporary solution
Biggest Challenge: Keeping a handle on all the clutter.
I change: the knick knacks in all rooms most frequently. I’m always working on the perfect accessory vignette.
What Friends Say: Nicknamed by one of our friends as ‘Urban Beach House’, that probably speaks for itself
Dream Source: Custom crafted anything, either by someone else or DIY, it’s such a great feeling to get exactly what you want and makes for a great story too.
Biggest Indulgence: Having our bed custom made.
Three words to describe my home: Casual, comfortable & happy
Reality source: Ikea, DIY, sample sales, Craigslist & Ebay.

I love this! This is how I hope our apartment turns out when we get all the furniture we need... I just wish all the photos were turned the right way.

Great apt...where are those credenzas from in the hallway and dining room? I'm in dire need!

Sarah, great to finally see your place! LOVE it. (have you made any felt boxes? I alas, have not) Love the cut out wall -- we only have 3 symmetrical cut-outs, close to the ceiling - yours is far more adventurous. Also really love the landscape painting in your living room, it adds another level of texture and richness. And did you have your chaning table made as a riff on a Netto? (we did).

I am also looking for your credenzas! Do they have openings in the back for wires?

all the unrotated photos were really annoying.
I love the cutouts in the wall separating the kitchen.

Probably the best use of Ikea and vintage I have seen in a while. Not too overpowering in either direction, well done. We also bought a co-op in JH last year and are just finishing our kitchen renovation, and we know what your apartment probably looked like before it looked like this! Nice job.

Did you make the wardrobes in the living room? Please tell me you didn't-- I want to know where I can get me some!

Aside from that-- what a wonderful, beautiful, crisp and organized space-- with character. Thanks for reminding me why I'll take a prewar apartment over a newfangled "condo" any day.

Beautiful apartment. You did a great job remodeling.
Please let me know where you got your kitchen hardware. I've been trying to find similar ones but don't even know what they are called.
Thanks and btw your daughter is adorable!

Very well done. Thanks for sharing. I am another AT reader from JH. I think the housing stock in JH is the most under valued in the city. It is so easy to live here and the apartments are super sized.

Hi there,
Thanks for all the great comments!
To answer a few questions,

The armoires in the dining room were bought at Troy. They were the store fixtures and Troy was selling them off when they moved to their new location. Made by a company called e15.

The sideboards were bought at the Conran sample sale, an annual must go for us, they don't have open backs for wires though, but that can be easily fixed with a drill :)

The kitchen hardware was purchased at Hafele, I think you can buy similar at Ikea.

Yes the baby changing table is a Netto knock off, we really liked the design, but alas we couldn't afford it and wanted something with a drawer so we made one like it instead.

Shout out to all the JH'ers out there! Hands down the best neighborhood we've ever lived in.

Best Sarah, Jim & Riley

I loved this one from the very first photo to the very last. Wonderful job of decorating, and nicely subtle use of Occasional Cat.

Hi there,
We made the bookcases in the bedroom...

And the drawer pulls are brushed alum on the Hafele link.

Also, if anyone's interested, you can check out the rest of our portfolio at www.urban-pioneering.com.

Have a great Thanksgiving, and thanks for letting us share our place with you.

Best,

Hi Monika,
I still haven't gotten around to making those felt boxes! They're for the living room, as you can see in the photo's all the toys are still in plain sight, ugh. One of these days it'll make it to the top of the list I swear!
Hope things are going well for you, would love to see what you've done with the gov't digs across the pond.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Sarah

I'm sorry. I may be in the minority here, but this apartment looks like an Ikea showroom. No originality.

Your place is beautiful! One question...where is your dining table from? I love it!

Or does anyone know where I can find something similar?

Great place, great design!

I love the peek-a-boo wall.

Lots of interesting furniture.

Good job on the concrete countertop. I'm guessing you did a reverse pour by the seam behind the sink? You could fill that in pretty easily.

Thanks for the tour!

Hi there,
The table is from Ikea, it's shown itself to be kid resistant

I like all that you have done! Thank you for sharing. What kind of paint did you use in the bedroom? If you could tell me the name and brand of the blue paint, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you :)

Happy Holidays
