NY House Tour: Uri Stays Monochrome

Name: Uri
Location: East Village
Size: 1600 sqft
Favorite: that it is rent controlled and is a big space with an open feel
Years Lived In: 13

House-Tour-Button06.jpgUri relishes monochrome as a background because of all the possibilities it allows in the foreground. Growing up in a Brooklyn home designed by his father and full of some of the furniture seen here had an impact as well on his color choices. While accustomed to this palette, Uri does not feel constrained by it...

uri housetour05_small.JPG

"People stand out more," says Uri when explaining why he chooses to live, primarily, among the colors black, grey and white. But it's not just guests that get highlighted. Uri loves how he can introduce one colorful object--such as the set of blue bowls in the kitchen--and it becomes the instant focus of the apartment. In fact, a couple of years ago, Uri had a yellow phone in the living room and he said, "it seemed like the sun."

Uri's apartment was once the between-act lounge of a Yiddish Theater. If you need proof, take note of the payphone in the corner of Uri's apartment, just behind the turntables! Soon, it might be the only payphone left in New York City!!!

The building is now a movie-plex. To throw out his garbage, Uri has to go downstairs and through the movie theater lobby to the garbage bins in the back courtyard. After 13 years of this ritual, the career ticket-taker finally recognizes him and no longer asks Uri for his ticket!

AT Survey:
My Style About 70% of the way to 2001: a space odyssey
Inspiration See above
Favorite element Argon, or the steel coffee table I made.
Biggest Challenge When I first moved in, the place was a pit. There was a giant hole in the floor of the bathroom that led to a dank, disgusting space large enough to hide a family of six. The hardest thing was becoming comfortable with pouring money into a rental apartment.
What friends say The most satisfying thing has been the change of the median comment over time: "Wow, you have an amazing place!" (2006) from "Wow, you could do so much with this place!" (1993)
Biggest Embarrassment Probably the 'temporary' shades that have been up for 18 months now.
Proudest DIY The bathroom. It went from being truly terrifying to my favorite room in the house.
Biggest Indulgence The 100-pound industrial coffee grinder from the 1940s that I bought at an antique store. The vendor had no idea if the thing worked, so I went across the street and bought a quarter-pound of whole-bean Kenya AA to check it out.

Resources:
Lighting Cords from Ikea; large incandescent bulbs from Just Bulbs; all the others are compact fluorescent

Love everything about this except the kitchen...WAY too open for me. Looks too cluttered. (I have too many kitchen gadgets that aren't nice to look at so I couldn't do that).

Jackson is going to talk about herself in the third person for the rest of the day. Uri inspired Jackson.

Also, Jackson likes Uri's place, but agrees the shower needs a washin.

Jackson, Uri referred to himself in the first person--throughout the survey. Otherwise I referred to Uri in third person.

Uri, stand aside. i think a lot of us will want to move in. rent-controlled? i am dying of envy.

I actually like the open kitchen though i agree the clutter could be worked on. (and time to clean out the closet.) but i like all the open shelving. those blue bowls DO stand out! there are many other things I like, the low bookshelves, the dining area, the big hanging bulbs. even though it is monochrome & modern the home still has a very personal feel/style to it. and is comfortable. thanks for showing.

As a monochrome kind of gal myself, I love this place and envy Uri for all that space.

I particularly like the way the pictures are arranged in one continuous strip, echoing the bookcases below which are in one continuous strip, echoing the modular couches, which also seem to be in one continuous strip and were even named the "Strips" line. So the whole place is modular and stripular.

it is refreshing to have a house tour of a tasteful monochrome home...bravo. admittedly, i am not a huge fan of color-color-color-everywhere homes.

I am guessing your apartment is above the theatre on 2nd ave and 12th street. I recognize the shape of the windows. (I used to live in an apt on 12th st.) Does your apt smell of popcorn? :) seriously, It is clear that you put a great deal of work and money into your space. I hope your landlord pays you a fixture fee for all that you've put into it, in the event you ever move out!

Slide 14: Filling a pot with water on the floor?!! I'm glad I'll never be invited to Uri's for dinner. Seriously, I'd be concerned about what else Uri puts on the floor and then on the kitchen counter, only to pass on who knows what germs to his guests or himself.

posted by Daily Nuance on 2006-12-13 15:00:35

Oh... and I also see a bowl on the floor under the kitchen counter in slide 13. Very, very glad I won't be eating dinner at Uri's.

Very nice! Monochrome is not my style, but I really admire this--it's stylish and modern without being super-cold. I especially like the rounded shelving unit on the wall and the light bulb fixture.

I would have a really hard time with the open shelving--where do you put ugly things like Tupperware?--but I admire your willingness to go for it.

Daily Nuance [sic], I am willing to bet people feel similarly happy not to have you over for dinner if you are prone to calling other peoples' kitchens germy.

Daily - I think the bowl on the floor is for a pet. It appears there is a handy water bottle above it.

Uri - I really love your place. I love the photos lined up uniformly above the low book cases. Hmm. I'd like to see some very geometrical black or white pottery on the shevlves. Also, the bulbs are really cool.

I absolutely adore the coffee table and am in awe that you made it! I love the little nooks for the remotes! This may be the first coffee table that would work with guy friends that I've known who have remotes all over the place!

Also, what is the art in slide 21 (I think?) on the wall above the computer? Did you make that as well. I'm very intrigued.

Are those really temporary blinds? I might be crazy but I dig 'em much better than the crappy blinds in my place. Can I have them when you're done?

Thanks for sharing. Really enjoyed seeing your place. If you make me a coffe table, I'll arrange your kitchen for you.

Great space. Great vision.

Still, I contracted hypothermia and died. I couldn't live like that.

But its friggin' stylish I'll admit that. It must be, because it looks really uncomfy.

I do LOVE the granite table and the half-dome shelving unit and covet them for myself. The color scheme and the open shelving in the kitchen, not so much.

Dreadful. I teach color theory and I find that people who design this way are often afraid of color. Modernist interiors certainly have helped usher in the modern era, but why is color such a polarizing thing amongst people now? yeesh. I really find the pics of this place industrial without the warmth of interceding pieces...and a yellow phone attempting to warm up a place like this is much the same as adding a thimble-full of sugar to a gallon of vinegar...doesn't do too much, and just makes the glaring absence of life and sweetness all the more noticeable...

I find monochromatic spaces soothing, calming and conducive to clear thought. Not everybody wants to live in a confetti bag. Deal.

Oh, and I love those plastic chairs in your apartment, Uri. Those are the Gaudi chairs, correct? Fantastic. If I lived in New York, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

>I teach color theory and I find that people

Malevich says you have no idea what you are talking about. Frank Stella would like to have a word with you. Piet Mondrian wonders if he wasted his life painting in only three primary colors. Richard Meier is laughing in a corner while hugging his Pritzker Prize sitting in the middle of one of his all white buildings.

White is one of the most difficult colors to handle in the visual arts. One could easily say that those who design with lots of color do so because they lack the skill to properly handle white as it is unforgiving of poorly designed spaces.

posted by Dave on 2006-12-13 22:22:58

Dave, I so agree with you.

Uri, I think your place is fantastic! Your use (and non-use) of color is sophisticated and stylish. You achieve just the right balance of light/dark, hard/soft, warm/cold. I love it!

And since when is "industrial" a bad thing? Some people don't want to live in a warm fuzzy cocoon. It's not for everyone. You have to be able to appreciate a space for what it is, not what you'd like it to be if it were your space.

By the way, love the open kitchen in this apartment. It goes along with the whole modern/utilitarian vibe. Very cool.

And may I say again, when you get white right, that's talent.

This space is perfect. I think the kitchen is fantastic. Julia Childs had a huge peg board in her kitchen with all kinds of tools hanging by hooks. To me all the elements of the kitchen are like the props for a stage show. Very cool. I also appreciate the modern look of the apartment made casual from the large comfy sofas and assortment of personal items. I would really like to know details on how the tub/shower was built. Well done.

I LOVE your open kitchen and would come for dinner any day of the week. I cook alot and have lots of kitchen gadgets and did not find your open shelving in disarray, au contraire, i was thinking how does he keep it so neat?! and your closet looks way better than mine. I think it shows you actualy live in your apartment and cook and such, not just using your fridge to store take out leftovers. Bravo!

Love the space, nice and bright and open, but it looked a little too undecorated for my taste...all function and no form. ( I guess I'm not a industrial/utilitarian kinda person.)

Hi all -

I hadn't really taken a good look at the site before having my house photographed - I really had no idea what I was getting into. It's quite an experience having your place up for scrutiny. And I was amazed by the range of comments that came back - everything from complimentary (thank you) to constructively critical (again, thanks) to head-scratchingly aggressive (um... you probably owe it to yourselves to work through some things. I'm just sayin') to amazingly sleuthy (well done). Suggestions were offered, words coined, battle lines drawn, and I'm suddenly considering referring to myself in the third person from now on. Exciting stuff. I've thought of my place as many things, but "controversial" was never one of them. Until now.

Thanks, all, for the introduction to AT and the thought and passion behind your comments. Some responses:

-Blinds: you can get them (vinyl or paper) for about $5.99 at Bed Bath and Beyond.
-Locker: From a great store in the East Village that used to deal exclsively in old steel objects from which they removed the paint. Unfortunately out of business.
-Artwork behind my desk: made by my mother, a phenomenally talented artist.
-Popcorn: the apartment never smells like popcorn, but when a big-budget movie is playing in the main theater, I sometimes feel the bass in the bathroom.
-Chair: It's a Magistretti Vicario, the coffee table height version of the Gaudi.
-Carabiners: they're totally innocent, leftovers from a recent camping trip. Please! (Besides, you can just get out of carabiners - police-grade handcuffs do a much better job and mine are discreetly tucked away in a drawer).
-Rent control: you're probably right. But I'm not enough of a conscientious objector to move out and pay market.

Also - tub: framed with plywood, then put on a two-part waterproofing system - a waterproof membrane that comes in a roll and a paint-on liquid. I forget the name of the product, but I bought mine at Strober Brothers in Brooklyn - if you go this route they'll know what you're talking about.

I love it! I'm representin for the chromafabulous and horror vacui-ous out here. (link in my name:)

I still love it.

Great space, wonderful presence. Every chef's personal kitchen I've seen is all about open, accessible, ergonomic.

I'm thinking white cords and fixtures for the hanging light bulbs, which I love the bulbosity of. I've been trying to figure out how to fill my apt with them. Great idea.

For your birthday, I'm getting you a point of use dedicated water filter faucet. Cheaper in the long run.

Pulling off the "Monochromatic Look" is no mean feat (it makes me nervous, I don't know why). But everything that should stand out does (books, artwork) and everthing that should recede into the background does (seating and storage). Lastly, appreciate the creativity displayed in the bathroom and the lighting!

"Pulling off the monochromatic look".....Dude...How hard is it to put together achromatic things in an open space? I do like your space and it does look very nice the way u arranged your stuff. I'd live in it. But these people on here who are making it seem like rocket science to pull together black, white, gray, and metallic things are just full of themselves. We can either say we like Uri's apartment or we don't. But to go as far as to say that he might be afraid of color is just nonsense. It never surprises me how people are never tired of showing off how much they know.

Keep up the nice work Uri. I love that industrial look.

Big loft. Reminds me of friends' places that used to have bangin' parties until the roosters crowed.

I like the monochromatic look and the furniture but I wonder if a lot of the clutter is due the fact that there is so much space to spread stuff out, especially in the kitchen.

The cords and bulbs turned out really well and the gallery wall of photos is very nice.

I like most of this house tour - Im not really partial to the bed frame.

However in this industry you need to appreciate all types of design styles and remember that everyone has different taste. Uri's interests and personality are reflected in a asthetically pleasing and functional way.

So Although everyone would not like to personally live here - you can't deny that is a successfull space.
