Inside Out: A showcase for those who transform their residences into homes
via innovative intervention
Location: Upper West Side
Size: 2000 sqft, 3 bedroom
"You buy one thing, and before you know it, it becomes a lot of stuff." Such is the confession of this week's house tour host.
It is not a mystery how the collections that pervade this home have come to be. Our host is a dedicated flea market attendee. And not just in NY, but in LA, and Massachusetts and any other place he happens to be.

What is perhaps most shocking is that this is a whole new approach to style for our host. Believe it or not, his prior home was a minimalist loft like space. Perhaps it was a rejection of the monochrome aesthetic or perhaps he was inspired by the pre-war detailing of this classic Upper West Side apartment. Either way, the mood caught him and he went with it, full throttle. There is a whimsy and self-mocking that makes the home not only jaw dropping, but a pleasure to experience.
Years lived in: 12 years
My Style: undefined
Inspiration: flea markets everywhere
Favorite element: the 10-foot ceilings and long hallways
Biggest Challenge: finding the space and resources to accommodate my acquisitive obsession
What friends say: "You have a lot of 'stuff'"
Biggest Embarrassment: not enough bathrooms
Proudest DIY: chandelier in the dining room
Best advice:More is more.
Dream Source: other than the St. Ouen flea market in Paris, the store The End of History in the West Village; Lizs Hardware in Los Angeles; Tepper Galleries auction house in NYC.

Erm... both slideshow and "see all pics at once" links aren't working... but the two piccies above are really fab! Love it!!!

Very lovely, but talk about a bull in a china shop! I'd take one step in that apartment, see the incredible array of breakables, and run for it. Terrifying.

I'm in love with the blue leather chairs in the sitting room.

Wow. And I thought I had a lot of stuff. Great space, wonderfully done. Best caption was about the landing strip.

Absolutely love it! Very "european" indeed. Wish I had a similarly big place (my flat is indeed really small), as that's my idea of home-feel, too.

Jonathan B is right about the landing strip caption: it underscores the dark underbelly of the landing strip. I'm a minimalist but I was utterly enchanted by the apartment. I even suppressed my wonderment at how it could be kept neat and clean and instead simply enjoyed the slide show.
Food must feel as if it's died and gone to heaven when it's brought from the kitchen (heavenly enough) into that dining room.

Oh dear, I am a lover of restraint but....
I am seeing a lot more over the top decorating these days and I fear for my own residence because I love minimalism, but also like beautiful things. Always a constant struggle not to have too many.
Your home feels very warm and happy. I have acoupla comments.
Photo 17. I adore that lamp. Would you say this is a Morrocan influence? I have been really into lamps lately.
Photo 22. Probably my favorite. Another obsession for me lately is turquoise. I love the chairs. Also love the well worn furniture and pillows. I love how the pillows are worn from use. I feel like I could curl up on that sofa, put my feet up with absolute ease and abandon. However, I would not have anywhere to set a drink. I would encourage you to clean off that coffee table. Have one completely empty surface on purpose. You can do it. Your place is so inviting, guests need somewhere to plop their feet and drinks. Also, the items compete with the items in your cabinet. You could always place items underneath the table. I adore that painting. Are you the painter? Hope the zebra rug is faux.
Photo 26. Love the glass collection. I could see how this could become an obsession. I only have one piece. I adore Blenko but refuse to buy it because I don't want to start an osmosis like you have going on and I already collect ceramic pottery. Love how you have it displayed by clutter. How about having this a dedicated area for only your glass and get rid of the other little knick-knacks?
Photo 27. Love the painting to the left? Again, are you a painter?
Photo 33. That chandelier is absolutely fabulous. Please contact me if you ever sell it.
Thank you for sharing your home. I enjoyed the tour very much.

It's really beautiful! Not entirely my style but I love the colored glass and doorknobs. I would absolutely have those in my home. But the best thing about it (for me) is that it looks so lived-in: neat and orderly, but lived-in. I have found that some apartments on this site, while aesthetically appealing, would look really bad really fast if I tried to live in them. I wouldn't feel as much like the bull in the china shop in this place as I would a sleek white modern apartment.

Does anyone recall the NYTimes article a few months back under Home and Garden about the perenial bachelor with the ugly sheets? :-)
view Anusha73's profile
I can still see the soul of a minimalist in here.
But could do without the whole "ugly faces" description of the portraits.

Love the dining room tablecloth! Is the fabric available?

So not my style, but it's absolutely wonderful. I love that shelf with the different colored nutty glass bottles, and the austere kitchen in contrast to the over the top dining room. Very clever and creative use of items that deceive you into thinking they are more antique, more rare, more luxe than they actually are. I can't imagine what it's like to live in (yeah, dusting, sure!?) but I bow in admiration to the person who put it together.

minimalism can also be about just one style or period. it's focus, and this is focused.

At first when I saw the dining room I thought 'oh, no', but taken as a whole it has loads of charm and it is a real home.
view hrhprincessfiona's profile
The amount of work you've put into your place obviously shows! The portraits on the wall in the dining room remind me of a Harry Potter set! I love it!

mama wants to know who dusts?
other than that, mama likes it.

Wowza! Bold, elegant, and beautifully true to your own vision.

what is the design effect called underneath the chair-rail? I have it in my new place and not sure what it is called. Thought it was called 'shadowbox'. Can that be right?

I love the groupings of the glass collection on the coffee table and in the hallway. I'd be such a clutz and break it all, but it's lovely!
I also love the bathroom chandelier--it's my dream to have a bathroom with a chandelier! If I may ask--where did you get your shower curtain? I have a black and white one now that I'm looking to possibly replace. Thanks!

I love the rainbow of colored glass in the hallway. I'm usually a "less is more" kinda gal, but that's definitely a case where more is more.
