When we last visited Jody's Fish Camp, she'd just bought the old crumbling oasis of vintage cool, and was beginning to think about the remodel. Today we catch up with her and check out the work. (Thanks, Jody! - Have you got a remodel we'd be interested in? Email us!).
With the weather getting a little warmer, I’ve spent a few days tearing off the 4 leaky layers of roll tarpaper roof that have been on the cabin for almost 100 years. It was very scary walking around on the roof as I didn’t really know where the weak spots were...

And then even more scary when I could see through the cracks between the boards! I’ve never roofed before, but the cabin construction is simplicity itself: 2” x 6” rafters with rough sawn 1” x 8” planks nailed on top. Roll tarpaper roofing should really only be used on flat roofs as it tends to leak and rot out sloped roofs. This weekend I’m tearing out all the rotted planks and replacing them with new rough sawn lumber.

I have 6 or so rafters that are rotted at the ends, so I’m going to sister new lumber to the sucky parts. I still can’t decide whether to put on a metal roof or shingles – thank god for tarps!

The truck in the picture is a rental I used to make dump runs. I filled it 4 times with garbage, old tarpaper and junk. It’s been a lot of work so far but I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel!

My plan:
1. Replace rotted lumber – use screws this time around!
2. Put down 1” thick rigid foam insulation on top of the 1” x 8” planks, giving me an R value of 5.4.
3. Sandwich the insulation with 5/8” cdx exterior plywood
4. Lay ice and water shield, drip edge + put shingles or metal roofing.

i loved this the first time and it's even better now. I'm planning to start my own reno on a TEENSY house and I'm a bit terrified... this is very motivating!

I fell in love with this cabin the first time it was posted and I'm so happy to see how it's coming along. Keep us updated!

The Bud Light and iPod/portable speakers made me smile. I can just imagine you kicking back and taking a break every now and then by enjoying an ice-cold beer.

It's amazing what one man can do. (Jody's gotta be a dude - just look at those kicks!) I can't wait to read/see further installments of the cabin reno. As much of a fixer upper as it is, the dappled light & beautiful trees give it such a serene quality. The pictures alone make me happy. Incredible work, Jody!

This is just so inspiring... ever since I read the first post, I've been looking for a secluded cabin like this. How wonderful it would be to leave the city house on weekends and escape to my country retreat. I can't think of anything more perfect.
