apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Maria's Gramercy Glam
House Call

Name: Maria
Location: Gramercy, NYC

I bought my two bedroom post war co-op around 18 months ago, and have been renovating it ever since. (I think it's beautiful!) My living room is a real mid century gem — I've bought a lot of furniture on eBay, and there is a beautiful blending of wood, taupes and creams.

Throughout the apartment, I have installed mirrored French doors (inspired by the NY London hotel) so you have this really glam feel. My bedroom is more old Hollywood boudoir — mirrored 30s furniture, sumptuous lavender silk bed with the same drapes, fringed with black beading. The bathroom is very different from most Manhattan apartments — very European spa with mother-of-pearl colored marble. And, my spare room is deep red with black trimmings. A good use of color throughout. I think it really reflects me — a glamorous, sophisticated woman in the city!

Thanks Maria!

I like how pulled together the living room is. Not quite too matchy. Love the credenza and matching natural wood color on the furniture.

Looks a little unfinished to me. Where is the artwork? Also, I think the rugs in the LR and red room could be larger...

This is cute, needs a little more decor to be pulled together but is sooo close to being glam. Also, she sounds fabulous and happy.

Where's all the art? You can't be glamorous and sophisticated without a little artwork to inspire you! I think some black and white photography would be fabulous in this interior.

This place has good bones in that everything is well placed and proportional, but I'm craving the finishing touches that give a home personality - tchotchkes from travels, plants, pictures, etc. With out these things, the place looks unfinished. Totally agree with design.va about the rugs.

So what if there is no artwork on the walls. Maybe she hasn't come across any works she absolutely loves or perhaps she just hasn't hung any up yet. Better to have naked walls vs. buying art just to fill a space.

I LOVE your place. If I didn't have a child & one on the way I would love to have a place like yours. I just wish you had more pics. :-(

What is this girl getting excited over? This is nothing special. Much more "blah" than "glam". Send this woman a dictionary. Either she and believes what she wrote about herself and is a bit nutso, or she's a professional PR hack.

There's something multiple personality about this, too: almost-midC living, reaching for hollywood regency bedroom, very contemporary hotel bath, and 70's upper west side dining.

All that said, I do really like the last photo. The hot pinkis/red wall is lovely with the tailored grey sofette and furry black rug.

I love the living room. It's very calming. I have about the same tones in mine, but I have lots of pops of jeweltone color.

I was wondering what was lacking in all the pictures, then it was pointed out... no artwork, pictures, or anythings on the walls. I disagree with a previous poster who said naked is better than filling space. Simple pictures are better than nothing. ANY photo turned black and white is awesome. Especially with the colors used in all these rooms.

I like your place and your attitude!

I think at some point you should purchase bedside tables and lamps that match the scale of your bed.

Oh, some of you are so bleeding negative. It takes courage to post photos online, and subject yourselves to the criticisms and objectives of others - it is really placing yourself in a vulnerable position. Sure, make constructive comments about the home - but really - common courtesy is that, if you have nothing nice to say, refrain from saying nothing at all.

To give this girl a hard time because she is confident in who she is - perhaps it is just a positive affirmation. It is not our place to criticise her esteem and self belief. Clearly some AT readers spend too much of their time reading blogs, and have forgotten some manners. Reality check.

Maria - gorgeous place. Well done you :)

Why is the flat screen tv mounted so high? Seems uncomfortably neck-craning high.

This place seems more like four different house calls. There's nothing that really relates one room to the next.

I like the coffee table though.

neat place/design. I especially like the first pic with the consistency of light creams and dark woods.

....and, heck, why not be happy and confident!

best,

First off, I do like the living room I think the best here. Nice and calming but also has enough going for it to keep it from being a snoozer and I will agree, the TV is mounted too high for comfortable viewing.

Secondly, I also agree it needs artwork and perhaps you just haven't got any up yet but the walls need something.

As for the rest of the place, I don't see any continuity between the rooms, some change in styles is not a bad thing, but you need to have an element to carry from room to room and I find the bathroom nice, but eh, I'd like to see people stay away from using too much beige/tans etc in a space and yes, we've had realtors and stagers hammer this home, do the kitchen in neutrals to help sell the place I say, BS. Decorate to your needs and desires (within reason mind you) and just ignore what others are trying to tell you to do.

One thing you have not done is resort to a cataloge to decorate your space but even here, it's coming off as a bit too bland IMO.
