- Welcome to Amy! One of our six bloggers trying out for a NY spot. Comment away...

I just moved into a new apartment in Ft. Greene, so I thought I’d share this corner of my surf shack inspired bedroom/office. My husband is an Aussie and it was his yearning for beach culture, plus the discovery of this Benjamin Moore surf blue paint, that triggered the theme.

I first saw this color in a photo of designer Todd Nickey’s (www.nickeykehoe.com) bedroom; at Nickey’s suggestion, I mixed in some white to soften it a little. I then picked-up this shell chandelier on a recent trip to the France. The good news here -- Dan, a English Bloke -- is selling similar ones for just $15 at the small outdoor Chelsea Market on 25th btwn 5th & 6th. The bamboo shades are Pearl River ($20) -- make sure you measure your windows, as there are many sizes.

I found the reclaimed lumber for my desk at M. Fine Lumber (www.mfinelumber.com) on the outskirts of Williamsburg. This one 12ft piece was $20. I’m still not sure yet if I’ll stain it. Max, I used the same spice brown dura seal stain on my floors as you did, thanks for saving me the hassle of testing a million stains.

Anyone else have beach/surf shack inspired rooms? I’d love to see the photos for more inspiration.

I love how you built your desk - more info please.
Overall, I like the tone and pace of this post. The detail shot of the lamp could be improved though.

This blue is brilliant! And thank you so much for the M. Fine lumber suggestion; I've been going crazy trying to find a place like this in the neighborhood.

ARZA & JonathanB - I was very nervous about the surf blue, almost went for Navy but it has turned out well and even my husband, who was against it, is enjoying the tone it sets. Reminds me to be bold with design, that's the fun of it all.
24KGLDFCE - if you go to M. Fine Lumber just know that you'll be looking at a lot of dirty lumber, you kind of just have to take a chance, pick a piece and sand it back. They aren't very helpful if you're buying just one piece but they are always friendly.
Thanks for your comments.

Lovely! I just have two concerns... 1. Is it hard to see the laptop against the light of the window, and 2. do you bonk your knees against the radiator?

ARZA - building the desk was easy...
1. measure the space
2. pick out the lumber
3. I had them slice it in half so it was thinner but I actually think a thicker piece would look better.
4. Sand it back
5 I nailed 1" piece of wood to the wall for the lumber to rest on. (let me know if you want photos)
6. In the middle is a file cabinet the wood is supported by as well. But it fits tightly wall to wall so no need for me to hammer into the 1" ledges built on either wall.
I recently saw something similar built under a staircase and painted white.

Nice Color. I love blue rooms. I'd be a little worried about the radiator under the computer in the winter. I had a friend whose computer was destroyed by radiator steam, and her computer was like 4 feet away!

Enamorada,
The bowl is actually half of a shell and inside is receipts from cabs and dinners that I have not yet filed away. That's all.
NordicFreak,
THANK YOU for that info on the radiator. I've been thinking about that and don't have a solution yet but will start exploring solutions. I'm hoping the apartment in warm so we can keep that radiator off.
Cheers, thanks for all your comments and curiosity.
