Ann is blessed by the fact that she lives downstairs from a talented designer who is embarking on a new career as an interior designer, Martin Hughes. "I want to help you express the beautiful, sexy person you are," Martin told Ann one day. And with that, he offered to whip Ann's apartment into shape....

"You never know who is going to have such a profound impact on you," Ann told me. She agreed to Martin's irresistable offer, let him know her budget limits for materials, assured him that "nothing she owns has to stay" (except for her clothes and some art books) and otherwise, gave Martin free reign over every one of her home's 400 square feet!
It is a work in progress and worth every lengthy discussion on the philosophy of design, every carefully thought through decision, and every meticulously crafted element including the credenza that Martin made by hand for Ann's studio. "I looked forward to coming home every day," says Ann because there was always something new and wonderful awaiting her.
Ann's approach to design and her initial efforts at setting up her new place are all quite laudable. Because Ann considers herself skilled in interior design, it was hard for her to let go at first. But Martin takes the art of living to a whole new level and it shows already in his attention to detail. He believes that one should love one's home so much that one would be hard pressed to want to go out, even in New York City!
Martin has three basic tenets for good design: simplicity, texture, and scale and proportion. When an apartment is small, it's even more crucial to incorporate these ideas every step of the way. There's no opportunity for waste or laziness when creating a small home. He's also a big fan of romantic lighting--at the very least, dimmers everywhere. In the instances where Ann didn't initially like what Martin did, the new element eventually grew on her and she came to understand Martin's larger vision for the space.
But wait, this is just the beginning. Martin has many other transformations in store for Ann's studio including a 6 foot headboard, faux shagreen lining the credenza, and custom lighting. Stay tuned for the next installment...

is this the right slide show?

Yeah AT- I think you have the wrong pictures linked to this.

Would be nice if the vertical photos were rotated properly.
LOVE the bombe chest. I inherited one I like, but this is truly a stunning showpiece.
I would like to see just a wee bit more color in the rug or bed linens.
Where's clothing storage?

Second the comment about rotating the vertical photos!!

Love the niche above the bed. Where does it go?

a lot of the slides kept switching to a home depot ad... and several repeated the laptop desk shot.

I'm also not convinced about these being the correct pics, but Good Gravy! That's a lot of Hermes boxes!

There's not one idea here that I don't want to steal.
I even tilted my head to the side to see the vertical photos.
I am inspired, and leaning sideways.

maybe it's just me, but i think if you keep the hermes box you should keep the scarf, or whatever, in it....and that it then belongs in the dresser or closet with the rest of the clothing. this is retail porn. i'm all for someone accenting or displaying a favorite dress or a purse collection....but packaging? i

I don't understand how this was done by a "designer". looks like all they did was paint the fireplace and add a rug. It's still very plain and (not to sound rude) but lacking personality.
The cabinets below the windows also look like they were made poorly....

Her designer presumably liked the way they orange and brown boxes looked in that setting. So what? You wouldn't be whinging if someone on a budget house tour had a stack of cool, simple boxes from a budget retailer stacked up on her dresser.
Why is recycling despicable because the boxes originally packaged Hermes and not IKEA?

Pictures will not load now.

I like the paint color on the fireplace. I've been thinking of what I could use other than white (sort of wish it had never been painted) but couldn't imagine it. If anybody has any ideas (tile, wood, paint, etc., that would be great).

When design takes priority, the result is often strange closets.

cassandra158, i think they are planning on putting an additional board bellow the pull-out desk which would fill the gap.
i like the built-in, and l-o-v-e the bombe chest!
looking forward to see pictures once all the little projects are finished.

I know it's a work in progress but those pictures should be hung up already, it's been 6 months!

Definately a work in progress -
She needed a 5x5 Expedit instead of the 4x4...
...and that credenza is poorly designed: the keyboard drawer should be the same width as the doors below.
I hope she paints the walls too

I would have loved to have seen the inside of the closet instead of more objects. Please stop showing stuff.

I hope this is still unfinshed - it doesn't come together yet - needs some defining characteristics in the paint or a colorful rug/pillows - right now it looks blah,
plus, how can you have room to stand in the kitchen?
agree with rotating those pics, BTW.
but would use that book alcove for more kitchen space rather than a guest room!

the shower curtain seems really short to me...
overall, the place needs color and a larger bookcase.

absolutely incredible that this place is just 400 sq ft. Nice job of making it spacious looking!

Agreed that the bookshelf is totally inadequate -- my first thought was a good book pruning is needed.
Also, I don't really care for that credenza -- it certainly doesn't fit in comfortably with the gorgeous bombe chest. The other thing that really bothers me is it looks like it's unfinished plywood -- are they planning on staining or painting this thing at some point? It could be a decent piece of furniture but it looks unfinished (also I agree that the keyboard tray is annoyingly mismatched to the doors beneath it.
Finally -- I'm not so fond of the bed placement. Well, I see the reason for placing it there, but my first thought was to wonder what sort of gymnastics must be involved in changing the sheets on the bed. And otherwise it really looks crammed into a too-small space for it. If it were me and I wanted to put the bed there, I think I'd have to take it down to a twin-sized daybed or something.

This snarkiness of this board never ceases to amaze me.
CRIMINY!!! The guy says it's a "work in progress..." yet on come the "it doesn't look finished yet..." comments.
Please read the post before blathering on....

Looks like a ton of space for a place that's only 400 square feet. What's the secret?
I must know where you (Ann) got your studio-size acrylic coffee table. I know they are all over, but I haven't been able to find a "studio-friendly" one ... or one that's within my decorating budget.
I look forward to seeing this in a few more months.

I have the acrylic coffee table from CB2 - it's definitely a bit more petite scale and I'd put money that it's the same one featured in this apartment.

This place could be out of this world when it's finished. I would like to see a house tour then. :-)
You might think about installing the window-side mirrors as in the NYC loft house tour shown here last week.
Will love to see color on the walls.
Don't be afraid to split up your books if there are other places in the flat that they could be stored. I love having collections of books all over, sorted by subject.
Add some narrow shelfs to the recessed areas near your bed and they could be wide enough to put some of your books.
I hope that those Hermes boxes were scavenged... otherwise you spent all the money that you could use transforming your space on a dozen scarves and key chains at their store! Or maybe you have a generous boyfriend? ;-)

love it can't wait to see more!

hdtex, though I see your point about the post specifying that it's a work in progress, I don't really get doing a house tour on something that isn't done - why not just wait another 3 months, or however long, and then do it when everyone can get the full effect?
I think a lot of it's really nice, but I too would rather see it completed, with maybe a few in-progress shots sprinkled in, rather than just seeing the current status and the promise of things to come.

too many vignettes. I like your vignettes and all, but I want to see creative use of space, not your things. The window cabinets- great.

Ann has the same problem I do: too many books. I have 125 linear feet of books and the same coffee table shown in her living room area. I desperately need some ideas for handling my books. And PLEASE . . . don't tell me to get rid of them. I've already donated about 1500 books to various local libraries. Some woman have a weakness for shoes. My weakness is books.

Hi. I was wondering if anyone knew the artist of the big painting, (not the grey & yellow one) I think it's picture 2. It's leaning against the wall vertically. It's multi color on an ivory canvas in a frame.
Thank you...
