Ray's Staircase Renovation
House Call

Name: Ray James
Location: East Village, NYC

I just completed a new staircase renovation with a modern, minimal aesthetic. I needed more storage so I built out storage under the stairs and removed a previous cable railing to open up the space.

Thanks, Ray!

Part of me loves it. And part of me wants to throw something on the floor in there. I guess there is such a thing as too perfect.

Beautiful. I love it!

Just a word of warning though. Any city with strict building codes is probably going to require a handrail on the outside of the stairs (some codes will require that the gaps between supports be no greater than 4 inches). If you're planning to own for a long time, this is a stunning staircase, but when it comes time to sell, you'll probably have to add an outer rail in order to meet code. (Building codes do vary a lot by city though so it's just something to look into.)

In my experience, building codes do not vary much from city to city, they're all based on the International Building Code (IBC), and I think (though I'm not an expert) that all will require an outer rail or barrier of some kind, at least above the pillar. So, I assume this whole renovation was done without building permits? You'll just need to disclose that when you sell, as long as your city doesn't do point-of-sale inspections, and it'll be up to the new owner whether they want to change it.

Your space is beautiful, love your floors especially!

I love that! I'm working on my stairs now. Who did the construction? IF you dont mind my asking, how much does a staircase reno like this cost?
Thanks so much!

Very nice. Can we see some more stairway treatment posts please? My tri-level stairs need help.

As for building code, had worked with an architect on this and it is legal to not have outside railing for single-family residential!

I am pretty sure too the stair would not meet code, and especially in NYC where stair codes have just become even more strict. However, that being said, it looks amazing and that will only be a factor when and if the place is sold. If you do ever get to that point, you could add glass to that side and keep the effect of the open stair. Love the high gloss black and white. Very nice.

LOVE!!!! What an awesome place. Please, more beautiful pictures--from every angle!

By the way, my friend has a staircase with no outer handrail. It was designed with an outer barrier, but she liked it so much without, she left it. It's been several years now, still no problems. She's just careful not to invite the building inspector for dinner. :)

Absolutely beautiful place! I am in the early
stages of renovating my apartment and doing the exact same thing to my staircase. Your floors are gorgeous as well. I have been searching for prefinished white wood floors and haven't had any luck. I know you said they were white colored maple, but did you purchase them that way or did you paint or stain them white yourself?
