I don't get it. What is this? Is it a once a year occasion or do these people live like this all the time?

Matilda, I think it's a once-a-year event, mostly....kind of like a Star Trek convention except with fire instead of Spock.

Think of it as an outdoor bohemian arts festival. A huge creative community springs up in the middle of nowhere...it's hard to describe. People build these amazing dwellings/sculptures/artifacts...it's unreal.

Where have you people been? This was Burning Man's 20th Birthday. ( www.burningman.com ) Now back to admiring the efforts of Vertical Camp.

Should have addressed it to the first three posters. When I read those posts, I almost thought they were joking. Star Trek convention? Well, there is the Spock Mountain Research Lab. No disrespect meant for our host or otherwise.

I would LOVE to see more posts like Maxwell's (from when he attended), centered on the shade structures. Much of the planning and funding go into this aspect of the event. Kudos for ATSF for the beginnings of such a post. MetroShed's MD42 was originally designed for the playa, I believe.

Anyway ...

Crafto, I wasn't comparing Burning man to the Trekkies--just saying it was a once a year event kind of thing, not a "live all the time" kind of thing in response to Matilda's inquiry. Sorry to have offended the almighty, too-creative-for-words burning man crowd. Sheesh. I'm sure some people who are trekkies would be offended with their conventions being compared to burning man too. (and, my tone was a bit tongue in cheek, as it usually is...)

And I would recommend Burning Man over Burning Sensation Man. Went there once. Not so fun.

I rode my bike past this structure many times - I really would like to create something like it for my camp next year. Almost a bummer that they're going back - I'd had to be a copycat!

There should be a website on the architecture behind the burningman, or better yet an architectural forum to discuse these kinds of things because I'm sure there is an unbounding education to be learned from these events. Seriously, anyone know of anything along these lines?

That's an interesting chandelier. Does anybody know who makes it?
