Blogging This Old House... Build A Custom-Look Window Seat

11.19.this_old_house.jpgNothing tickles us more than taking an off-the-shelf product and transforming it into something more. That's why we perked up when we saw this project from This Old House.

The project, Build A Custom-Look Window Seat Using Stock Kitchen Cabinets, takes standard Woodmark cabinets as sold at Home Depot...

...and converts them into a semi-custom window seat. The cabinets used are the small ones that are typically wall-mounted above refrigerators. Their height is about 18", making them well-suited to this repurposing. Read the rest of the how-to at This Old House.

This was so timely for me, we are building one for our new home, and I have been looking for an easy way for us to do it.

THANX!!

Ah yes, fodder for yet another exciting project!

I've been thinking about my entry storage project. If I were to go with an Ikea Pax wardrobe, perhaps I could create a bench like this using the same cabinet material and matching doors to create the seamless piece I have been looking for.

Hopefully the depth on the cabinets for the bench will be the same as the wardrobe.

Thanks!

and,

the cabinets below the bench are going to be for recyclables.

They will be close to the front door to be taken out when full. No need to take up kitchen cabinet space.

I highly recommend the window seat! I had a cushion made to fit one of our big windows and it's long enough to stretch out on for a cat nap. The sun feels sooo good in the wintertime!
