With a little help from The Container Store, we learn how to choose the perfect hanger during this Bedroom Month. Hangers contribute to the longevity of your wardrobe and some can even help to make the most of small closets.
We're partial to metal hangers, like what you see here. Wooden hangers are nice but we find they take up too much space on the rod in our bedroom closet.
Cedar hangers are nice, though, for the coat closet or long-term storage, as they'll ward off moths.

I went to the Container Store recently because I couldn't believe they were actually charging $7 for a single hanger. They must be talking about packs of a few hangers, right? Wrong. They really are charging $7 for a single hanger.
Anyone use huggable hangers from hsn? My aunt loves them. They actually do make your clothes take up less room. I couldn't personally justify it, and something about giving Joy Mangano money makes me cringe.
I have one of those blanket hangers...works well
I recently bought flat black wooden hangers from www.hangers.com The price was much more reasonable then the Container Store. The profile of the hangers takes up much less room than traditional wooden hangers. I did two closets for about $200. Click on my name to see pictures posted on Flickr.
Any opinions on the multi-packs of wooden hangars sold at IKEA? I would like to have wooden hangars and IKEA seems to have a good price but I'd love some feedback from anybody who has some. I'm tired of our white plastic 13-for-$2 hangars from Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond!
We use the IKEA hangers for our coats. they are nice. I wouldn't use them for normal closet as they take up more space then the plactic ones. We use plastic hangers as we hang dry most of our clotes to plastic hangers in the bathroom rod, then transfer to the closet.
Mags,
After my recent move, I switched my entire closet over to the wooden hangers from IKEA. They do take up a little more room than the metal hangers referenced in the post, but they are a nice, affordable option and it gladdens my soul to have all of my clothes on the same hangers. I know that it shouldn't make me quite so happy, but it does.
One thing that I did to make them a little more functional was to loop a rubber band around and around the top "shoulder" of all of the hangers. I own and wear a lot of dresses and it really helps to keep the straps in place and my dresses off the floor.
huggable hangers are AWESOME!! they are totally worth it and don't leave your knit clothes with the annoying hanger stretch thing... i love them.
Mags -- I've bought bunches of those wooden hangers from IKEA and have generally been pretty pleased with them. Occasionally I've had the bottom dowel come loose from one or two, but I've only had to chuck out one of them that was unusable. They are pretty cheap and comparable to the ones from BB&B, although not smoothed/polished as much as the hangers a slight step up from the IKEA ones. They are slightly slimmer though, so don't take up as much room.
Mags,
I use the Ikea wooden hangers and I love them and use them for most of my wardrobe. They have proven to be as durable if not more durable than several more expensive wooden versions for me. They are finished well and don't snag on linings or knits. They are also narrower in profile than many more expensive wood hangers - so they are space saving within their 'species'.
Yes they take up more room that some other hangers but I like that. IMHO closets can become too crushed with clothing which doesn't allow them to breath (musty smell) and protects against wrinkles.
I am keeping a handful of padded hangers for delicates, some skirt hangers (three more than the number of skirts I own) and a handful of plastic hangers for air-drying shirts (stored in the coat closet when not in use). All the rest go to Goodwill.
One question ...Regina, you have room in your closets to hang your blankets but not enough room for wooden hangers?!! really?
Thanks for the IKEA hangar feedback :) It sounds like they will suit my needs just fine.
And "bird and beef", I completely understand your happiness with having all the same hangars!
add my name to the huggable hanger fans (although I bought mine cheaper on ebay).

Don't bother with cedar hangers - or anything else cedar. It does NOTHING to prevent moths. If you doubt this, check out one of the textile preservation sites. When cedar closets/chests are brand new, they MAY be helpful - but after that, their only benefit is that they're sealed tight, preventing critters from getting in.
Home Depot sells the same wooden hangers that BB&B does - but much more cheaply.
Best place for super-cheap, same quality hangers is online. Hangers.com, hangersdirect... storesupply.com (where you can pick up a mannequin and flourescent sign too!).
