How To: DIY Saarinen-Style Side Tables

sidetable01.jpg

Tyler from Plastolux had a hankering for a pair of Eero Saarinen side tables, but he wasn't quite excited by their steep price. After scouring all the usual sources for a deal but coming up empty-handed, he decided to try to make his own. Can you guess what he used for the bases?

The bases are old Bose speaker stands! Tyler scored the pair for $70. He cut the tops out of MDF board, and painted them black. Pretty clever.

Sadly, I'd probably have settled for a couple of these: http://www.target.com/Trumpet-Table-White/dp/B0015MJQAC/qid=1242756494/ref=br_1_2/178-8059782-5564125?ie=UTF8&node=10738811&frombrowse=1&index=tgt-mf-mv&rank=price&rh=&page=1

His version looks closer to the original, but two of these cost less.

Those old speaker stands can be as hard to find than the real table. Good job though. Did you bevel the edge of the top like in the original?

Comicgeek, I was going to bevel the edge but the bit was $30 and I wanted to keep these on the cheap.

not sure if they look better in person, but the target knock offs dont look good at all online.

i love the DIY ones he made & that it repurposed something/kept it from a landfill!

Great job! I would have loved to have those as speaker stands too, though. Off to hunt for some...

Brilliant! And looks not only 100 times better than Target's version, but also sturdier and not tipsy as the latter.

I actually FOUND an original one of these tables (white) in the GARBAGE AREA of my building. It had belonged to a smoker because it was laden with yellow and black residue. I scraped down the cast iron bottoms and the underside of the tops. Then gave the bottoms a few coats of high gloss. Not bad for a TRASH FIND.

Oh I definitely wasn't implying that the Target version was better! Plastolux, yours are absolutely nicer. I'm just poor and untalented is all. I'd certainly rather have yours!

Not really! Bose still sells them here: http://www.bose.com/controller?url=/shop_online/speakers/stereo_speakers/accessories/901_pedestals_acc.jsp

There are plenty of those speaker stands on ebay. They are from the bose 901 series. Although you will most likely end up paying more than $70. They come in chrome and white also. I'm tempted to do this myself!

bemyescape, you are right in fact there were a pair of chrome ones on ebay last week. I almost bid on them but had to show self control. :(
