How To: Make a Copper Pipe Storage Rack

pot-rack-x.jpg

We were pretty excited to spot this pot rack made from copper pipes. We have a special place in our heart for pipe furniture here at Apartment Therapy — they're industrial, green and DIY friendly! We could also envision this pot rack functioning as an entry storage unit with S hooks for hats and umbrellas. It could even work in a space for kids. You could use the s hooks to hang toy pails. (You'd have to keep the monkeys from using it as a jungle gym!)

I don't think that copper piping could ever be considered to be green since copper mining is incredibly destructive to the environment. I think it's fine that people like the look, but let's not green-wash it!

I really like this.
This is the first time in 7 years I miss my ex, the plumber.

You don't need to be a plumber to make this (I don't believe this would be connected to your water line, unless you want it to be. That would be a . . . . look, I suppose.) It's just like playing with an erector set. You can make any shape you like! Find connector bits at your local hardware store, measure, cut/connect, screw in.

Interesting idea.

I agree w Emily...
...and considering the cost/ scrap value of copper pipe these days, i'm doubtful that this is an economical alternative to a store-bought rack either (but rarely anything is at TOH)

Reb-Oh I know it would not be connected to the water lines. It is just a plumber could built this and solder it together so quick. I have seen a bed frame done with this same material. An accent piece like this is fine. A whole house of furniture just screams a little to much DIY Network to me.

Hi guys- I should have clarified what I meant by green. I was imagining that one could reuse pipe scraps from another project for this purpose.

Amy A, you are spot on! It's green if you have it on hand. I had many extra lineal feet of 3/8" and made curtain rods with doorknob finials :)

It's VERY attractive. It might go well with the gutter that I use as a spice rack.

most, like 80% of copper is recycled.

that sounds pretty green to me.
