How To: Make a Headboard with Electrical Tape

2-9-sklose55.jpg

Name: sklose
Location: Sunnyside, NY
Time: A few weeks of thinking about designs, roughly two hours to actually do it
Cost: $1.07 for a three-pack of electrical tape at my neighborhood 99c store

Don't all talk at once, but this is bound to provoke some comments. This is a great how-to that Sklose submitted to last year's Jumpstart Contest and which won a prize for most likely to be copied (Thanks, Sklose!)...

AFTER

Tell us the tools and resources you used for the project:

black electrical tape
tape measure
scrap paper + pen for notes
pencil for marking wall
rudimentary algebra skills

1-29-klosebefore.jpg
BEFORE

Share step by step instructions for how you completed the project:

1. Rejected the idea of actually painting on the wall in case I choose not to renew my lease in May.
2. Came to terms with the fact that the spun-sugar Baroque confection I had originally envisioned would be too difficult to create in black electrical tape.
3. Came up with simplified, yet pleasing, design.
4. Measured width of room and width of bed.

1-29-klosetools.jpg
MY TOOLS

5. Subtracted bed width (62") from room width (134") and divided the remaining amount (72") by two (36").
6. Measured 36" from side walls and marked for sides of headboard.
7. Realized that calculating for the interior posts would be much, much easier if I were dealing with 60" instead of 62".
8. Moved marks for sides in one inch on each side.

1-29-kloseduring.jpg
DURING

9. Applied tape at each side to 52" from ground ("outer posts").
10. Measured 32" up from the ground at each side. Applied tape across ("lower edge").
11. Marked halfway point (30") and applied tape 26" from lower edge. (See progress photo.)
12. Moving out from the center, applied tape every 5" with heights of 25", 24", 23", 22" and 21", with the outer posts measuring 20" from lower edge.
13. Ran tape across tops of posts, stretching and smoothing to create a slight curve.
14. Cast critical eye upon it. Tweaked some spots.
15. Poured a glass of wine. Toasted self.

Well, when I first saw the After pic I thought: wrought iron bed?

Interesting idea, although I don't think it would stand up to a closer look.

Punk Rock, Genius and it totally made me laugh. Actually it totally made my day.

It just needs to be marketed better. For example, if the author of the above "headboard" said, "An in situ DIY project in homage to both the DADA art movement and everyday industrial materials, with a dash of classic Trompe d'oiel along with a nod to the innocence of decorating our first apartments after a giant bong hit and a cup of 'shroom tea" people would be all over that Sh*t on Ready Made.

It actually made me laugh though because after reading this, I realized far too much time is spent looking at, talking about, comparing and debating bed headboards in the first place. And far too many people take headboards and other home decor far too seriously.

sorry--hit the wrong button there.

This is what apt. THERAPY is supposed to be about: Thinking outside the box, doing what makes us happy, spending a comfortable amount of time and money AND effort, and sharing it with others.

If you don't like it you're not obligated to adapt it to your own use, but try to at least smile. I won't use this idea, but I did laugh. Hadn't seen it before.

Thanks, Maxwell

haha thats great.

I'm with lizzy, it could have used a slightly more creative spin. Its not for me but I think it has potential to inspire other things.

I would love to see a light coat of spray paint over this then peeled off, as if someone had spray painted a headboard that WAS there and then it was removed. It could almost then be called art!

Fun post thanks for sharing!

The proportions are wrong, and it looks uncomfortable and dangerous -- like your head and pillow would fall through between the "bars".

At first glance, it looks awful... I think it would look better either lower down or with the pillows flat against the wall... I'm not liking that big space and I don't think it would be there with a real headboard.

I think it would also help if the blanket/lamp situation was better... I mean, there really isn't much style there, so black electrical tape isn't exactly going to do a whole lot to fix things.

Actually I thought it was just a regular headboard until I read the title and had a closer look.

In a couple months this will be all the rage: 'depression-style deco' lol

Aside from the time committed to executing this idea, which, well, done in tape is tape, I think it might be a fun step in the decorating process to imagine the headboard you really want and are saving up for, or to see if you would really like what you've found and can't decide. Draw or tape it up before you buy.

Those last 3 words are kind of important though. Obviously this is a "matter of opinion," but it's not either.

I think that this idea is high in opportunity low in execution. I agree with many of the previous comments in that the proportions are off, the design is wrong, etc., however the idea of using three dimensional design elements in a 2D way is something that designers have been playing with a lot recently. Simply look at the wrongwoods collection at Moss:
http://www.mossonline.com/product-exec/product_id/42896

or the Proctor and Gamble pop up store:
http://streetattack.com/blog/?p=527

a more inspired and well executed version, or one made of precision cut matte vinyl in a baroque pattern and it would most certainly find a home in someones house (though not mine...), much like these have:
http://ny-image0.etsy.com/il_430xN.44703348.jpg

The current iteration...not so much. It didn't make me smile but it did make me think, which is even better if you ask me.

It probably would have helped if the picture at the top of the page had the before image come before the after image so that it doesn't look at first glance like they got rid of a head board instead of added one.

I know this would involve an extra step, but why not just tape out a headboard in painter's tape and then paint out the headboard.

Also have to wonder if the electrical tape would damage the drywall....

People seriously need to chill out.

It's a headboard made of tape that only cost a dollar. Were you expecting greatness? I like it. My only issue is that it's a little too tall. Other than that, way to go sklose! And, excellent math skills, btw...

I don't see how this is really any different than any other mural or those 'wall decals' that people spend 50$ to put fake paisley on the wall. At least this one is individual and cheap. I think it's fun and funky. I would consider doing something similar. My bedroom is tiny and there is 0 room for a head board.

You know, I think it's pretty great. A perfect example that innovative and modern design doesn't have to be expensive or imported. While it might not be for everyone, it works for the designer...

Besides, I'd like to see somebody else try to make a headboard for $1.07 ;)

Kudos to you, Skolse!

Thanks for the re-post, as I missed it the first time!

I agree with those who said that this is part of the idea behind apartment THERAPY - all styles, all angles, all budgets, all access levels, all sides of the brain. It's unarguably innovative, whether or not it's for you. Flawless, high-budget design resources are a dime a dozen - pick up one of a hundred magazines. Real life applicability is priceless and that's why this entry is here.

Moreover, like andrew c said, it made me think (and look twice), got my thoughts flowin, even if it wasn't exactly my style - and that's worth plenty.

I wouldn't use this in my house. But it made me smile, and think, "Clever!" What more do I ask from my blog reading?
