How To: Make a Plaid Pillow from a Goodwill Jacket

Shelly from Flipt Studio sent us this pillow making project which utilizes those fantastically wild plaid jackets you can find from at the Goodwill or other thrift stores. The tutorial is really a 3-in-1 as Shelly teaches how to: cut the jacket to find usable fabric, make a covered welt cord, and how to join two loose ends of welt cord together (a technique used on many upholstered projects). Yes, this project is for the truly crafty! Are you up to the challenge?

Supply List

  • 1 or 2 cleaned plaid garments (good colors)

  • scissors

  • pillow form

  • welt cord

  • welt cord or zipper foot

  • sewing machine

  • curved needle

  • fabric for the back of the pillow

Full project instructions and many more photos can be found on Flipt Studio.

I saw this done on the show ' Steven & Chris ' (CBC).

Only, they did this with sweaters. They looked pretty good. They also did one where the sweater originally had a pouch in the front. They said it's a good place to keep the Remote Control.
