We're down to 0 bottles of bottled water at home. Having sworn off one of our favorite drinks, we're not jonesing yet, but we've definitely been mulling over the options. Meanwhile, Faith - over at The Kitchen - has hit the ball out of the park with this great overview of all the options. We particularly like the DIY solution from Instructables.

Did anyone see the article in which Aquafina admitted to bottling tap water and Dasani said that their water was clearly marked as being purified? Purified tap that is.

Most bottled water is just filtered tap water.

One of my favorite New Yorker cartoons is of a guy with a beret and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth standing in water that he's bottling...can't remember if that water was perrier or evian, but you get the idea...

Is this one of those products where there is no meaningful definition -- for instance, does "spring water" have to come directly from a spring?
I use my Britta pitchers and fill up a bottle for the car.

I also drink a huge amount of soda. I looked at the sodamaker but it was really expensive. I thought there has got to be a cheaper way. Finally I found plans to make a home made system that is WAY cheaper than the sodamaker -- I can make seltzer for less than 2 cents a liter! Here is where I found the plans to build your own soda and seltzer system in about 10 minutes for less than $100 bucks.

It's serving me well and I am making some delicious sodas! And I don't end up using all that plastic, or even worse, shipping all that water!

My Dad had a thing called a soda siphon which consisted of a clear glass bottle covered with very firm narrow metal strips. There was a place on top in which he inserted a little cartridge, shaped like a bomb which contained CO2 gas. He would then shake the siphon to extract the gas. Hey presto! Press the lever and you had lovely soda water for drinks. My brother and I liked to have it with the syrup from cooked fruit. This was in the 1950's.

Appreciated the tip on Starter Seltzer Kit from GreenDepot. I ordered, having the long-held wish to stop buying plastic seltzer bottles from Safeway. Back in the '60s, I had the glass bottle that was charged with CO2 gas , but it got difficult to find the chargers, and the bottle got misplaced; so it's been going-without or settling for sometimes flat screw-on, plastic bottles. Look forward to my order.

I believe if you and your family are soda drinkers- then this make would make a great addition to your kitchen.
The convenience, costs savings etc def make it worthwhile.
I got mine thru http://makeyoursoda.com as they offered a $10 coupon on the site.
The best bet is to get several flavors- so you get to enjoy the variety
