How To: Paint Your Floors White
Tips & Instructions from Door Sixteen

door16logo.jpgWe love a painted white floor. Maxwell gave a quick tutorial for painted floors a few years ago, but Anna at Door Sixteen just posted some of the most thorough instructions we've seen. Anna's home in the City of Newburgh, NY has become a laboratory for design, and we've been delighted that she's always willing to share her experiments with us. We did a house tour of her home last February, and recently featured her renovated bathroom, but she is always one step ahead of us with a new project.

Like with any good paint job, Anna spent most of her time on the prep.

  1. PREP: She removed all carpet tacks, nails, etc; patched the holes with wood filler, and dug out all rotted areas of the floor and repaired with a 2-part epoxy consolidant; then she sanded; installed shoe moldings, and vacuumed!
  2. PRIMER: Anna applied two coats of primer with a roller followed by a shellac-based spray to knots, and holes.
  3. PAINT: Three coats of paint applied with a brush. She used Benjamin Moore's Floor & Patio paint.

Whew! What a job, but it certainly looks worth the effort! We've summarized Anna's work here, but you can get the full instructions from Door Sixteen. We can't wait to see this room completely finished. Anna's going to use ferm living's fir tree paper on one of the walls!

Thanks for sharing Anna! For all the reasons behind the paint job, and to see the rest of house, go to Door Sixteen.

That is a nice floor.......I had done this once in an older apartment I lived in just a couple of shades darker. It's pretty durable as well.

It's a beautiful white empty room.
Did you see how beautiful her refinished white radiator is for that room.

This is fab! I just asked about this on another post last week and it must have been Anna who said she'd be posting instructions soon. So thanks! Now we just have to decide if we have the energy and ambition to do this in our bedroom--in an apartment it's a little harder to move all the furniture out of a room and escape from paint fumes...
