Just inside the entrance to the cacophanous and cavernous ICFF show is this
mindful installation by Karin-Beate Phillips, founder and director of the British
European Design Group. Created "on the skip" from packing material,
pallets, and all sorts of event flotsam, the space comments with wit and vim
on both consumerism and creativity. "The only energy needed to create it,"
says Phillips, "is brain-power."

uh....and it's supposed to be what?
It it supposed to encourage you to think outside the box and to believe in your own creativity.
Yes, Clemens, and I also felt encouraged, in this anti-IKEA space where price is seldom displayed and the retail crowd is discouraged, to think about sustainability and total cost of ownership. When we consume, we also discard. Seeing this installation as I entered ICFF piqued my interest in the work of other designers, who I'll be blogging about later, who carefully consider both the what and the how of the materials they use and the way their products are packaged.
Shannon, I imagine you would also be interested in Karin's latest initiative, "SOS - Save Our Skills", as well. We have just created the identity and the project will be introduced at the ICFF. there is only a temporary website so far but you can already show your support by e-mail: http://www.sos-saveourskills.org
