apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Andrew Dusing's MacBox Furniture

After posting on Jose Vila's FedEx furniture last month, we got an email from Andrew Dusing in upstate New York, saying he'd been making furniture out of boxes for even longer! We said "great!" send us your pics, and he obliged.

Here's his story:

In 1999 I began building furniture out of card board boxes, to be specific Macintosh Computer boxes, originally living in a small 1 room apartment just out side of Fayetteville NY necessarily was the mother of all invention. I furnished my apartment out of one of a kind Mac. Box Furniture pieces.

Dusing has been featured in Ripley's Believe it or Not and in Wired News.

But, interestingly, since Dusing found that Apple Computer was far friendlier than FedEx, he incited no legal backlash and didn't get any hot press coverage either. But, says Andrew, "I'll never need to buy furniture again," he said. "Whenever a need arises, I know I can make it out of cardboard. I just wish I had more boxes."

Something about this stuff just looks better than the FedEx box stuff. I want to see grey walls, though.

I'm impressed.
I'm sure Apple is proud of his work.

Cool stuff. I'm not surprised Apple didn't get angry; I assume he didn't get the boxes without buying (or without someone else's buying) computer equipment from them.

One thing I never thought of with computers getting smaller and smaller is that the boxes get smaller and smaller too. I mean, look at those old Studio Display boxes. They're huge. My most recent moniotr box was maybe 5 inches thick. And you can't built anything with a nano box. He is going to have to stock up on G5 boxes.

perhaps nano box bricks?
I'm sure he'll think of something, or move to lovely fruit boxes

It doesn't look very comfortable...perhaps some cushions fashioned from bubble wrap or those little "plastic bag air pillows"...Very creative though!

Thank you all for the comments. I just wanted to let you all know that yes the boxes were acquired from Apple by purchase. I Worked for Cazenovia College in Cazenovia NY, in the Macintosh graphic design lab. When the college got new computers, I got more boxes. As for the nano box, I have plans for some animals, after building a rhino and Giraffe a Swordfish is in construction now, so no matter the size of the box I will be able to build something. I also have made canvas cushions for the furniture; they are not in the photos, as I wanted to show off the design work.

Thanks for the comments

Great work Andrew!

I would like to make furniture like that too if I had the time and material! Maybe you should try to make a gallery with all your stuff. I you have made enough it will be very nice I think!

Keep up the GREAT work (like this)!

Just an idea tht got into my head: You could try to contact Apple and try to get in a commercial with it! Imagine your furniture (with you) on a huge poster or on tv! :P
