Says Dan Wheeler of his and his wife's collections: "What I think I’ve learned is the collections are fine on their own, but in proximity to others new conversations crop up: of color, scale, purpose, fun. While we architects always appreciate and admire emptiness, we also are learning to appreciate the density of density!

it's borderline too much.....but hey, give me a few years and my house will probably look the same! I love the pieces as individuals........

Minimalism leaves me feeling cold and this makes me feel like I'm suffocating. I like a happy medium.

At long last, an antidote to 'edited' collections. Less is more? Unh-uh. MORE is more. Love it.

i kind of like the collection of paintings. i think because there's still a lot of white space on the walls. otherwise, it would be too much.

oh my gosh, i almost had to run for cover. claustrophobia....*twitches*

...ok, if there was one dense collection at a time, i could see that...but this living room is dense everywhere. if it were a little cleaned up except for, say, the globe collection, that'd be a little easier on the heart. :)

This is probably quite charming in real life, since the space has a lot of ceiling height to it - so I suspect the three-dimensional impact is much less claustrophobic.
I like the wall of paintings in principle, but taking a closer look I don't find the kitchy art at all appealing... To each their own, of course, and kudos for the panache.

The walls I like, but the rest of the room is a bit much for me. Makes me feel anxious, not relaxed.

This house makes me feel twitchy. No thanks.

I never realized "OCD-chiq" was a new design style.
I see what they're going for, but it's just not done well.
Off to the right, you have that oddly placed and not well-balanced collection of photos/paintings. Then you just have that total mess going up and around the stairs. Yet over on the left, there's absolutely nothing.
The room has no balance, and just kind of feels like a mess.
Finally, that completely stupid posterized Barack Obama image just has to go. Those were tired before they were even cool, and I'm just sick of seeing people put a posterize effect on everything. It's so lame.

That fireplace is really cool. It would be nice to see it as more of the focal point of the room. Right now you barely notice it through all of the clutter.

Sadly, I would have to agree, it's much too much of a good thing, for starters, a counter full of wooden bowls is just too much for if you need to use it, you'd then have to clear space first and the wall just jammed full of pictures, most I would not care for is too much of a good thing and the room just looks crowded, true, it's a photo which is a 2D rendering of a 3D space but still, it just looks visually cluttered.
I DO like the shelves full of pottery, such pretty colors and they are neatly displayed but everything else, not so much.

I love it! I'd love to see more of this home!

It's nice to see an alternative to the minimalism everyone seems to favor lately. To me, when items are part of a collection, they don't really seem like clutter. Unfortunately, photographs of full rooms don't seem to communicate this very well, since there's not a focal point to the image. In real life, they seem very cozy though.

I like the mismatched artwork on the wall above the bench, and I love the fireplace, actually, the entire living room is pretty great. However, I agree with ErikTheRed and find the Obama poster to be rather gauche.

Love that art grouping on the stairwell. What I esp. love about it is the unabashed, unapologetic use of art that others would be too timid to display. To quote Back to the Future: You are my density.

Does this house also feature a live-in maid that dusts every day? I like the look of it, but I think my eyes are bigger than my sinuses!

It's weird:
I find that "cluttering" walls with art and shelves with books never seems to bother me. Blanket a table with tschotkes or crowd a kitchen counter with appliances and I go ape.

If the room were a bit cozier I could see it, but since it's in such a large space it seems more like a globe and art shop. Where would you set down your coffee cup or put up your feet?

awesome fireplace. kitchen=anal clutter.

Clearly, this family doesn't have any fear with displaying everything they love. I like the colorful pottery collection in the kitchen...but the bowls seem too much. I also like the display of art on the stairway. I hung several pieces of art along my stairway, but not as much as the one featured here. Overall, I like it and could live with it.

Apparently the above user does not like ANY space. I find this infinitely amusing. And I'd LOVE to see their home! http://community.apartmenttherapy.com/com/User/jdoz
