Well, it's not really about nines, but it's really a rule of threes. It's just that nine is conveniently easily divisible by three.

If you're going for a strict geometric shape, then yes, you're kind of bound to nine, or hell, 16. But if you're going for a more montage-y look or more eclectic, then I don't think there's a rule.

i'm not surprised that nines work so well, because i've always felt that things worked in threes beautifully, and nine is a perfect translation of three....three times three....love the post, thanks!
