I think that is really ugly.

new? they've been around for at least five years now, and have become a cliché on their own. hardly ever pretty, depending on who filled them.

I can't imagine what you could put inside that would possibly look chic.

Fun idea, but they have a maximum of 40 watt bulbs -- so not a light of light (unless you go with yucky fluorescents) -- we passed.

I could see this working as part storage/part decor. Say three of them lined up above an artist/crafters desk (would they be enough light?) and filled with ribbons in three different hues. It might not be the most awesome interior design light ever, but as a arty person who has a weakness for beautiful supplies, I think it could be a pretty way of keeping things visible and ready to use. Although I really don't get why IKEA's playing up the "bucket" aspect of it with the handle and everything (didn't notice that at first).

I think you could line the bucket with colored lighting gels (from the stage) or square pieces of colored cellophane. It might be cool if you stuck to one particular color family.

I could imagine shades of amber and yellow, all overlapping. But that's just me.

i used to work in theater and forever had bits of lighting gel left over. those would work. also, plastic army men. that was my first thought when i saw them.

they would have no place in my dining room, but i'd love three of them as a series in my laundry room, or anywhere that i could get away with cheap-looking, fun decorating.

I hate it with stuff in it; I like it empty. (And yet I think -- would get dusty.)

It's kinda fun, kinda ugly, and kinda impractical. I could see it in a studio or kid's room, but that's about it.

i think it's fun. yes, location is everything with this type of lamp, but if you had one random, small object that could go in there. it'd rock.

Filling it with ping pong balls might be kinda cool. Especially hung over a ping pong table!

Nit: you probably could use non-conductive liquid, like mineral oil.

Oh, I don't know...it might be a great place for your composting worms...or, wait...an ant farm! Yes, that would be good.

I think this is the single most fun and crazy item in all IKEA. I would've liked it more as a desk lamp, simply because it's so ridiculously cool and somewhat ironic. If I had somewhere to put it, I'd buy a few... I'm thinking it's one of those things that is kinda pricey right now (@40 bucks for plastic, it kinda is) but soon will go on clearance for 5, when I will buy it in bulk and use it in fun places, like I did with the color-changing cubes which I used for indirect lighting under the tv locker. WOOHOO!
